this is just a quickfix solution to the whole low ratings problem. they wanna ensure the 6season minimum so that the show can be syndicated (which jus means more money for the show and network)

The good and bad news for Lost fans: there are 48 more mind-boggling episodes of the deserted island drama left.
In an unusual move, ABC announced this morning that they made a deal with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse for three more seasons of Lost. The shortened 16-episode seasons will run uninterrupted, and by the time the show ends in 2010, the mysteries of the island and its inhabitants will be resolved.
That means "The Others", the black smoke, the island's restorative properties, the pregnancy issue, Desmond's clairvoyance, the Kate/Sawyer/Jack/Juliet love quadrangle, the outside world's presumption of the passengers' deaths, the Dharma Initiative, the electro-magnetic white-light thingy, the polar bear, Rousseau, the buried alive Nicky and Paolo, Walt and Michael's escape, and the island inhabitants' many mainland connections will all be explained in three years.
Phew! Even with the advance warning, we're wondering if there's enough time to get the job done.
Talk to Us: Can Lost provide satisfying answers to its multiple mysteries in 48 episodes?
