MADD Dumps Miss Teen USA

Mothers Against Drunk Driving announced Wednesday that it was severing ties with Miss Teen USA Katie Blair, 18, because the organization was "disappointed" by news reports that she had been spotted partying with Miss USA Tara Conner in NYC clubs, the Associated Press reports.

"We do not feel, at this time, that Ms. Blair can be an effective spokesperson on underage drinking and will not ask her to represent MADD in future initiatives," said Heidi Castle, a spokeswoman for MADD, in a statement.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump -- who owns the Miss Universe Organization, which includes Miss Teen USA and Miss USA -- announced at a Tuesday press conference in New York that he would allow Conner to keep her title on the condition that she entered rehab for alcohol abuse.

Conner, who turned 21 on Monday, tearfully admitted to drinking as a minor in NYC nightclubs and bars.

Miss Universe Organization spokeswoman Lark-Marie Anton said that Blair will also be allowed to keep her Miss Teen USA title. She added that the organization respected "MADD's decision as much as we respect their work. We look forward to working with them in the future."

I dont think Kelly Ripa is a homophobe, she has her beliefs like everyone else. Clay was wrong to do that, but he made a mistake and did something dumb - She is the host of the show! Not him! If Regis put his hand over her mouth it would have been a different story. Rosie isnt a moral compass for anyone either with the way she talks, among other things. But at least shes not saying she IS a moral compass. So whatever - Trump is being just as rude and brutal as she is. He has lowered himself to her level, and as uaual, all eyes are on him. He loves the attention and he loves to talk. Rosie should rise above this and diffuse it, lawsuit or not. She should come out on top the right way, not by running her mouth. Poor Barbara has been put in the middle by Trump - that is wrong - he dragged her into it.

I agree w/ their decision. I am 25 and I agree that alcohol and minors dont mix. Minors are prone to make some bad choices, hey I have! The drinking age is 21, not 18 - so how can an 18 year old girl who drinks and parties be a spokesperson for MADD? Thats like having Mike Tyson be the DARE spokesperson! Or Whitney Houston for that matter! Thats like Britney Spears being up for the Mother of the Year award.

MADD is right to drop her. 2nd chances should be given after the person cleans up their act, and not based on promises in the emotional aftermath of getting caught. Working in the substance abuse field, I hear promises everyday. I also see those promises get broken. Now if the person did the work, and actually changed over a period of time, then a 2nd chance may be in order. But without holding the person accountable, they will simply be buying more time before carrying on.

I think a better question is: Do you think Rosie O'Donall made a good decision when she criticized Donald trump for giving an young alcoholic a SECOND CHANCE? Maybe Barbara Walters shouldn't give Rosie a second chance for making racial slurs, calling people[Kelly Ripa]homophobes and instigating fights.

absolutely I think MADD made the right decision, but here's the deal, they both broke the law. it's a little easier to swallow given that tara was so close to her 21st birthday, but the other girl, no. BUT, they both broke the law, so essentially the message being sent is it's ok to break the law because nothing will happen to you if you do.

Isn't ironic that Tara Conner (Miss USA) claimed that young Hollywood was out of control. Her question doing the 2006 pageant was if she thought young Hollywood was out of control. Turns out Miss USA is no better than Britney, Paris, and Lindsay. LOL Unfortunately the pageants world is becoming a joke. You can thanks Miss USA and Miss Teen USA for the pageants world's down fall. If this isn't enough, Miss Nevada was kicked out of the March 2007 Miss USA pageant because of her Party Girl behavior.

I do not see where MADD had any other choice but to sever their ties with Miss Teen USA. She has conducted herself in such a manor that there was no other way to handle the situation. I believe the tears and sorrow we see from Katie is only because she was found out, not from regret of her actions.

Of course there are millions of underage drinkers out there. But they aren't representing the youth of America like these two young ladies are. Most of these girls have been in pageants all their lives. They know the importance of a clean reputation. Its not like they just started partying either. These two misfits have been endulging long before they were crowned...meaning they lied on their contracts, and are completely mocking the purity of what these pageants are supposed to represent. They should have never been a part of the pageants. there are more wholesome girls out there that could be representing as Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.

Miss USA doesn't deserve to hold that title if she wants to act like a rebellious kid. So many responsible and deserving young women would do anything to get and KEEP it. Yes, alot of us did underage drinking and made mistakes, but if you were Miss USA at that age I'm sure you would've appreciated it and took into consideration the example you were setting for millions of young women. She was breaking the law and acting totally out of hand in the public eye. And her conditions of keeping her title are rehab? I never thought I'd see the day when it'd be ok for Miss USA to be in rehab and represent our youth at the same time! That's no role model to me. I hope my little sister doesn't take any of this pageant stuff seriously, because I'm ashamed of Miss USA being an example to a smart and promising 12 year old.

I think that MADD made a good decision. As for all the hype they are putting on the poor girl, it is ridiculous. Everyone makes mistakes. The pageant is just trying to get more publicity since there ratings have been down the past several years.

I think they made the right decision. We lose to many people every year due to drunk driving. And I think that Miss USA should have lost her title as well. I am from KY and yes I understand that she got caught up in the world-wind of NYC, but no one made her go into padgents and persue this job. She made this decision herself and I think a second chance is crazy. I know if I show up to my job and don't follow guide lines, I would be fired, there would be no second chance. There are too many young girls that look up to Miss USA and Miss Teen USA as role models and wish that they could be in their shoes. If you have two girls out parting and drinking while underage, that only incurages those looking up to them to do the same thing. If they were given a second chance to screw up in front of the world, I think younger girls would think why shouldn't I be given a second chance if I drive drunk and kill an incocent person or two? That is just my thought, people get away with too much crap today and too many others have to pay for it.

Anonymous 11:36 asked, "why isn't she being (either of them) accosted for the drug claims?" The reason is because drugs are illegal, and therefore it's taboo for them to even talk about those allegations. If they did talk about it, police might feel obligated to do a criminal investigation into the matter. Simply put, it's because it would stir up a lot more trouble.

I agree with that decision. You can't have a girl who drinks underage be an effective spokesperson for MADD. About the one who said why not fire Miss USA--isn't it only Miss Teen USA who does the thing with MADD? Anyhow, I do not agree with letting the Miss USA keep her title. She is only sorry for being promiscuous and underage drinking (though she just now has turned 21) and hard partying because she got caught. These beauty queens sign up to be role models (though I never understood people who look up to those girls) and what kind of role model does that kind of thing and not only that, what kind of message does it send when you only are contrite when you discover that there will be consequences and backlash?

Yes I do think MADD is correct in breaking ties with Miss Teen USA. But I think to be fair it should have also broken ties up with Miss USA as well. You can't punish one without punishing the other. While it is great they both get to keep their chances and are so to speak are on probation with this second chance. They should have equal punishments.
