Madonna Goes to Malawi, But Not to Adopt
Friday April 13, 2007
![]() INFphoto.com A spokeswoman for Madonna confirmed Friday that the singer was going to Malawi over the weekend, but denied a newspaper report that she plans to adopt another child during the trip, the Agence France-Presse reports. "Madonna is going to Africa to continue her work with the Raising Malawi organization," the star's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg said. "She is overseeing the building of a children's healthcare center. She is absolutely not adopting another baby." The British newspaper The Sun cited unnamed sources saying that Madonna is intent on adopting three-year-old girl Grace after watching a documentary about a child care home for orphans in the country. "She spotted a beautiful girl called Grace who lit the room with her smile, and fell head over heels for her. Madonna kept saying, 'That girl has so much love in her. I want to help her achieve her potential,'" the source told the London tabloid. Meanwhile, an insider tells Usmagazine.com that the Material Madopter also plans to visit the Home of Hope Orphan Care Centre where she found David last year. Officials at the orphanage have confirmed to Usmagazine.com that the singer "will be visiting us soon." The facility is being spruced up in anticipation for the singer's visit. According to the source, walls are being repainted, flower beds replanted and the children have been given new uniforms. The 48-year-old singer sparked a furor last year when she and husband Guy Ritchie began the process of adopting a Malawi child named David Banda, now 18 months. Soon after, the boy's father, Yohane Banda, come forward and say that when he relinquished custody of David, he did not realize that his son would be taken out of the country for good (he later said he supported the adoption). The couple now hope to formally adopt him. They have two other children -- Lourdes, 10 and Rocco, 6. "It was always Madonna's intention to adopt two orphans from Malawi -- a boy and a girl,” the source told The Sun. Well, that's a relief. For a second there, we were picturing the fickle pop star walking in to the orphanage, holding up little David and asking, “On second thought, does this come in a girl?” and then having adoption officials clear out the rest of the prospective parents and lock the doors so she could shop for her replacement child in peace.
