Yohane Banda, the 32-year-old Malawian biological father of Madonna's 20-month-old son, David, never met the boy, who accompanied the singer on her six-day visit to the southern African country.

“I never met him,” said the soft-spoken farmer in a telephone interview from his Lipunga Village in the border district of Mchinji. “Plans were there for me to meet David but it never happened.”

After David’s mother died from complications in childbirth, Banda placed his son in the Home of Hope orphanage, saying he was too poor to care for the infant. (David’s two siblings died of malaria in infancy.)

Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie began the procedures to adopt David last October, told the tomato and onion farmer that they would be bringing his son back occasionally to visit his biological father.

But, on this particular trip, adoption officials told Banda that Madonna was in town primarily to inaugurate her new orphanage in Lilongwe and to promote other philanthropic projects.

According to Banda, the government’s Director of Child Welfare services, Penston Kilembe told him that “meeting me was not on the agenda but [Madonna’s] people said if time allowed she would meet me.”

Banda was in another town visiting his ailing former brother-in-law when the 48-year-old singer stopped by the orphanage, so Banda’s brother Pofera (a secondary school student at a school run by the orphanage) stopped in on his behalf.

“I think people mistook Pofera for me” says Banda, who adds that after the meeting, his brother briefed him on David’s progress.

“Pofera told me David still looks exactly like me,” he tells Usmagazine.com. “He told us David is very healthy, he runs a lot and can speak a little coherently.”

Does Banda have any messages for David’s new family?

“They have to know David's roots. But I know it will happen one day, some day, hopefully before my mother (58-year-old Asineti Mwale) dies. I must say my mother was looking forward to meet David and she was a little sad it was never to happen. But I assured her it will happen one day.”

Malawian child welfare officials are scheduled to visit Madonna and Richie’s London home in May and December and then file a report on their suitability as adoptive parents. The couple have two other children, Lourdes, 9, and Rocco, 6.

“To the whole family...I wish to say thank you for looking after David,” Banda said. “I know you won't let David forget his roots. I know when he grows up he will assist his kilth and kin to come out of poverty.”
