just because the parents smoke doesnt mean the kids will end up smoking, my boyfriend's parents have smoked for years and he doesnt smoke. neither one of my parents would ever touch a cigarette and i ended up smoking for 6 years.i think if anyone ends up smoking its because they choose to.

Shame on them for polluting their kid's precious lungs because they think its cool to smoke. My mother got lung cancer from being in an office with people who smoked and that was only for 2 years exposure and she died in April. What a bunch of idiots.

Back in the day smokers didn't realize all the risks but now in 2008 they should.

Hey 8:45 PM - having a few drinks in front of the kids does not cause cancer. Drinks do not emit deadly fumes, idiot.

I am not a real fan of either but they seem like good parents. Obviously they aren't smoking in front of the child or he'd be asking what they were doing, not what a cigarette butt is. I am sure they tell him it's part of a bad habit. I have no kids but my husband and beloved pets don't smoke, so I smoke outside ALWAYS. Non-smokers and EX-smokers, please, save this for the drinkers and drug addict parents.

I am not pro smoking, but sometimes the same people who complain about smoking don't mind a few drinks tho, in front of the kids.

Two observations:

Has anyone ever seen a photo of either of them smoking a cigarette in the presence of their child? Probably not because say what you will but they are smarter than to do it right in front of him. They live in New York City for crying out loud, I'm sure the child sees plenty of people puffing away every day. What Matthew Broderick said in the above quote is "He sees a cigarette butt and asks about it". Not "He saw Mommy and Daddy smoking".

Second, where are all of the people who love SJP so much? Why are they not here to defend her? Personally I can't stand her, never have. But so many people praise that idiotic show of hers that they turned into a movie, it wouldn't surprise me after this article if cigarette sales go up. Because, gosh, if it's cool enough for Carrie Bradshaw it must be cool for me too right?

Last I knew smoking was not illegal. What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business.

Both my parents smoked all their lives, lived into their 80's and neither one of the died because of cancer. I have 3 other siblings and only the oldest chose to smoke. None of us had asthma or allergies. Just because you're parents smoke does not mean you will.

So...what a lot of you are saying is that you would rather take your chances and INCREASE your risk of getting cancer? Sounds like a smart idea. Maybe I'll start walking down the middle of the interstate to increase my chances of getting hit by a Mack truck....Hey, I'm only using your logic.

Okay, and to the people who think that their 10 and 11 year old children are old enough to make their own decisions...you obviously don't deserve the children you have.

2:30, I don't even want to know what condones a "special occasion" in your family that warrants your elementary school-aged kids to have a cigarette, but I'm sure it involves two of your cousins getting married. You are a liar, or if you're telling the truth, a friggin deadbeat. I do not have children -- nor do I really care for them -- but I CANNOT imagine any parent letting their child try cigarettes. If your kid was 18 and they could legally make that choice, that'd be a different story.

And by the way, my father smoked for decades while we kids were growing up, and I'm the only one of us siblings who smokes as an adult (and yes, I know it's bad for you). Matthew Broderick and SPJ can do what they want, but I hope they teach their son the ramifications of certain behaviors, like smoking.

Matthew Broderick & SJP are good parents, but they shouldn't be smoking, but little kids wonder about that kind of stuff! I personally hope their son doesn't ever start smoking, etc.?

What child wouldn't be curious about adults who are meant to know more but pollute their bodies by putting a white burning stick of tobacco in their mouths and coating their lungs with tar. It is a very strange thing to do.

Umm....I think you mentioned before that YOU are the one that hooks them up with the smokes...try looking in the mirror, if you can see past the smoke in your home!!

Great parenting! Teaching your child how to get lung cancer at an early age. Not to mention all the second hand smoke his poor lungs are already exposed to. Shame.
