Swimmer Michael Phelps' family have been glued to their seats during the Beijing games.

"It's like a roller coaster, we just keep going up and down," his mother, Debbie, told the Today show on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Phelps, 23, won his career 10th and 11th gold medals — the most-ever by an Olympic athlete. The sports announcer hailed him as "the greatest Olympian of all time." Watch the video.

“Before he swims, you can wring your hands and rock back and forth, even though there’s nothing we can do about it," sister Hilary, 26, said. "There’s nothing we can do to help him, but your heart really races. We are more nervous this time then we were in Athens, but it never ceases to be exciting."

(Phelps won six gold medals in Athens — just one medal short of breaking swimmer Mark Spitz's record of the most medals in one game. Phelps has already earned five medals in Beijing, and is trying to beat the record again.)

“We take every race and we celebrate that — we’re relieved when it’s over, but we can look forward to the next phase," added mom Debbie.

She said her family never interferes in his games.

"This is his office; that’s how I look at Michael’s pool,” Debbie said. "He’s going to work, and his work is performing at his highest level."

So the Phelps clan — who say they stay in touch with Michael via phone and text message during his busy Olympic schedule — split their time between the swim arena and the mall.

"Our downtime, we go shopping," Debbie said. "Our uptime, we go to the pool."
