Doctor to Tom and Katie: "Wean Suri Off the Bottle!"

Thursday – November 05, 2009 – 4:20pm

On Wednesday, Katie Holmes was photographed bottle-feeding daughter Suri on the New York set of her new movie, The Romantics.

Should the girl, 3, still be hitting the bottle?

No, experts say.

Check out adorable photos of Suri in Boston last month

"She should have been weaned off the bottle by the time she was one year old," Dr. Jennifer Shu, a pediatrician and co-author of Food Fights, tells Usmagazine.com. "By the time kids are nine months old, they have the physical development and mouth coordination necessary to be able to drink out of a sippy cup or a cup with straw. That development comes pretty early."

So what gives?

Shu says she doesn't "know why" Tom Cruise and Katie still allow the girl to use a bottle. "You don't force kids to crawl when they can walk," Shu tells Us.

But Dr. Harvey Karp -- a pediatrician, child development specialist and creator of the DVD and book, The Happiest Toddler on the Block -- doesn't think it's such a big deal.

"Sucking is normal for kids when they are tired or bored -- as long as kids aren't keeping the bottle in their mouths for hours" he tells Us, adding that it may serve as an emotional security device. "Thumb-sucking is more damaging."

But Shu tells Us that if Suri is using the bottle out of comfort, her parents should "transition her to a different security object that doesn't cause cavities," such as a blanket or a Teddy bear.

Or, perhaps, some high-heel shoes?

MY DAUGHTER IS THE SAME EXACT AGE AS SURI. I SPOKE TO A DENTIST AND HE SAID THAT THE TEETH THERE ARE NOT PERMANENT, AND WILL NOT CAUSE TRAUMA TO PERMANENT TEETH. BOTTLE, CUP, PACIFIER, OR SIPPY CUP. IT'S THE LAZINESS OF THE PARENTS THAT CAUSES THE TEETH TO ROT. ITS UP TO THE PARENT WHAT THEY PUT IN THE ITEM TO BE DRANK OUT OF.

actually bottle, n or paci. increases risk of ear infection...its recommended that you replace "that" comfort with that of a blankie, or stuffie...seriously ppl she is too old to be suckling!! my lil one took to the straw @ 8 mths, the sippy by a year, n she now drinks out of a reg. cup @ 17 mths...i know you dont care, but as an example..there is no excuse!!

I know I recall using my bottle up until about age 4....especially to drink my hot cocoa in the morning and at bed time...and I would venture to say I turned out very well adjusted...

ummm what if the kid just like bottles? my brother stopped using bottles when he was almost 5 years old and my parents did try to get him into the habit of drinking normally. some kids just prefer the bottle more than normal drinking cups... and they just grow out of it when they want to. it's a free world people *rolls eyes*
  • November 12, 2009 - 7:47pm Annoymous Says:

Annoymous, This is REALLY STUPID for these parents to still be giving this kid a BOTTLE at her AGE.almost four and still taking a bottle. HOW STUPID OF THE PARENTS!
  • November 12, 2009 - 9:30am Julie Says:

Each to their own,...but i figured they would be able to afford to feed their own kid by now with some real food.

Get a life people and worry about your own kids. Pathetic.

Suri is 3 yrs and 7 months old. It was time for her to stop using the bottle about 2 yrs, 7 months ago.

  • November 10, 2009 - 7:16pm kris Says:

this is disgusting and shows how little time the parents, not a nanny, are spending with her worrying about development. get her off the bottle.
  • November 10, 2009 - 3:18pm Lu Says:

When Suri's ready she'll stop drinking from the bottle. My daughter was the same and when her time came she stopped. No need for stress or worry. And no one has the right to judge the parents for something like this. Remember its a child and it is only about drinking from a baby bottle.
  • November 10, 2009 - 2:54pm Chris Says:

That is just crazy. With all the money that they have tied up in their daughter, making her look like she is all grown. With the nannys...you would think that someone could have found the time to get that child off the bottle a couple years ago!! It isn't cute, it looks ridiculously stupid to see a 3 year old on a bottle. She should be well out of the sippy cup by this stage. Maybe a sippy cup in the car or something but thats about it. Wake up people.
  • November 10, 2009 - 1:13pm R. Bodbyl Says:

Raising happy, kind, well-functioning children should be ones only concern. Stop judging her/his parenting skills based on one snapshot.
  • November 09, 2009 - 11:32pm ha Says:

I don't think it is such a big deal. If the kid likes milk in a bottle, let her. Better that she has her milk than not! My 2 kids did the same until they were 3 and no harm was done and our dentist say they have great teeth.
  • November 09, 2009 - 6:56pm Clairzilla Says:

I'm sure the only reason she's still bottle feeding Suri is because she can't wean Tom off her breast.
  • November 09, 2009 - 4:48pm Sari Says:

Ten bucks says that she also screams a lot for attention. That's probably why they shove a bottle in her mouth (which is ridiculous). Katie and Tom are both wierd.
  • November 09, 2009 - 2:29pm lola Says:

I think its ridiculous how they take time to dress that little girl like a little lady making hear wear little heels but yet they dont find time to help her get off the bottle...
