Life is rough for Midwestern prof Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) in 1967: His wife rejects him, his brother moves in and won’t leave and his son is more interested in Jefferson Airplane than Hebrew school. Joel and Ethan Coen’s bleak comedy about growing up Jewish is a dryly amusing, and ultimately disturbing, take on a father’s search for meaning in his uncertain world. It’s another defiantly original movie from the Oscar-winning duo.
