Winona Ryder: Angelina Jolie Never Thanked Me for Girl, Interrupted Role

Monday – November 02, 2009 – 2:01pm

Winona Ryder is not holding any grudges toward Angelina Jolie -- even though she says the star never thanked her for helping her win an Oscar for their 1999 mental hospital drama Girl, Interrupted.

See Angelina's old modeling photos -- from when she was only 16 years old!

"I feel like it won't read in print very nicely if I say that wasn't really her style," Ryder, 38, tells BlackBook magazine's December issue. "But she seems to be a completely different person now."

Ryder, who was the film's lead star and executive producer, says that she "never had any bad feelings about" Jolie, 34.

"I was hurt that people thought that," she says. "Everyone assumed I was really jealous because I thought this would be my vehicle. We said from the very beginning that the actress who played Lisa would probably win an Oscar, because it was the big, great, showy part. But I always related to Susanna…"

In fact, she says she "fought very hard" for Jolie to get the part of Lisa. (Ryder has also said that at the time they worked together, she actually felt bad for Jolie because she was still struggling to be taken seriously as an actress despite her "beautiful" looks.)

Her only regret?

"I never really felt like I got the chance to know her," Ryder says.

Actually I agree with you on that one, I thought I was the only one too as no one seemed to mention her performance. It was a big part of what made the film powerful for me, especially in the scenes with angelina because she held her own better than Wynona did in some scenes. You knew something was going on and that it was uncomfortable to watch, which can be credited to her acting. Its a waste of talent when you look at some of her films but I suppose they have to take whats on offer.

Probably the only one who felt this way but I felt that Brittany Murphy gave a stunning performance in Girl Interrupted. I think she was overlooked because the part was relatively small in comparison to Ryder and Jolie's parts, but wow, that girl really had emotional depth. I felt that her performance was just amazing. Subtle yet brilliant and entirely underrated. She had a lot of flops since then but she showed her true acting prowess in that role. As for not thanking her, maybe she meant on a personal level on one one. Who cares either way? I doubt she meant it nastily.

winona needs the publicity. if she can't get it by dating robert pattison, then she'll get the attention by dishing out on angelina! hell, i'm surprised that she didn't dish on brad pitt.

From latimes blogs, you can see the video. Angelina Jolie DID thank Winona Ryder for 'Girl, Interrupted.' At the Oscars! Contrary to Winona Ryder's apparently flawed memory, Angelina Jolie did thank her for her support in "Girl, Interrupted." As you can see from the above video, she thanked Ryder in front of about a few million viewers onstage at the Oscar telecast back in 2000. Read Winona's complaint here! Thanks to our Dish Rag readers for pointing this video record out. And yeah, maybe it wasn't the kind of personal suck-up Ryder wanted but that speech definitely contains a thank you. Ryder told BlackBook that she was responsible for Angelina

Another actress with a movie to promote speaking about Angelina Jolie for publicity. Its called jealousy. Angelina's career went downhill after winning the Oscar for Girl, Interrupted. She doesn't owe Winona Ryder anything, who is clearly holding a grudge against the poor woman. Envy is not a good thing.

Winona and many other women are jealous of Angelina, (or wanting Angelina). How can you resist it when she is sooooo beautiful, talented, and giving to the world. Get over it women!!!
  • November 03, 2009 - 9:45pm Linda Says:

Winona Ryder must be living in a dream world, because if you watch Jolie's acceptance speech for the Oscar she won for Girl, she clearly and Thank you Winona, and then something to effect that she owed it to her.. .

Like Angelina Jolie would thank anyone. I wondered if she thanked Jennifer Aniston for Brad Pitt?

in which part did winona say she wasn't thanked? i can't find it in the story.
  • November 03, 2009 - 1:58am TruthSpeak Says:

If those are truly Winona's words then they read exactly like she is implying that Angelina never thanked her which is a lie. Angelina won pretty much all the major acting awards that year for Girl Interrupted and she acknowledged Winona throughout the awards season. Winona should thank Angelina because it is only because of Angie's great and memorable performance that anyone remembers that movie or wants to see it. It did not get good reviews as a movie. Angelina made that movie watchable. The US headline is written deliberately to rag in Angelina. What is wrong with these tabloids?
