Naomi Watts Named UN AIDS Ambassador

Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts has been selected as a special United Nations ambassador on HIV/AIDS, according to Reuters.

UNAIDS said that in the role, Watts would "use her talent and profile to raise AIDS awareness and give greater voice to the needs of people living with HIV worldwide."

The 37-year-old, born in Britain and raised in Australia, recently joined a UNAIDS mission to Zambia where she visited clinics, hospitals, schools and shelters.

Watts said she was "humbled and inspired" by those she met.

"I only hope that, as a UNAIDS special representative, I can do my small part to raise AIDS awareness and to encourage greater international support for the vital work being done on the ground," she said in a statement.

While I think I am one of the few who doesn't ASSUME that because some celebs speak out on issues, means the ones that don't speak out are just, as Spooky says "shopping thier asses off".
**Many stars don't like to talk about thier donations amounts or give time and money to such a variety of causes that no one stands out in the publics minds.**
I do think however, that Niami is a great choice. She is real and sincere and likely to be a great rep of the UN.

dsm, i think thats a pretty interesting thing to say...i think you have a good point with the fact that having sex with young children will definitely NOT cure these people of AIDS, but i do think you're making a pretty big generalization. you don't really know what's going on there or the thoughts in those peoples heads. you might want to consider what they are going through. not all of the people with AIDS are having sex with young children. many are victims of the disease, and havent been truely taught how to go about having sex safely. so instead of focusing on the bad, lets just try to help them.

Mandy, do you understand the comment? id you know that most of the AIDS suffered in this world is in the 3rd world countries and do you kow why? Because the men believe having sex with virgins and children will cure them of AIDS. Why do you think so many CHILDREN over in Africa and those countries have AIDS? They aren't just having sex with young girls Mandy. They are having sex with babies and little boys. Anyone who is young and virginal. And many of these people have been converted to ROman Catholicism and the church's stand point on condoms at this time is a NO GO.

So, just try to get this through your head and then reread what I wrote. Yes, I read the Wall Street Journal and New Scientist on a regular basis.

DSM- and I thought you were all out of ignorant comments, but I guess not. While having sex with young girls is wrong, 3rd world countries are not the only countries with that problem. You need to do research on what causes AIDS before you make ignorant comments.

she should teach men the imprtance of wearing condoms every time they have sex and she should also teach the woman importance of birth control.it may not do a differences that much, but little things like that can decline the spread of AIDS AND HIV.
