American Idol Adds Fourth Judge

 Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images  American Idol is adding a fourth judge: Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi. DioGuardi will appear at the judges' table with Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson on the eighth season of the hit show, which premieres in January. "We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges' table," show creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said in a statement. DioGuardi's songs have appeared on more than 100 million records by the likes of Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Pink, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey. The songwriter's work has also been used by past Idol contestants, including Katharine McPhee, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, and Clay Aiken. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show," Fuller added. American Idol was originally slated to have four judges, executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said in the statement announcing the news. "We've seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers," she explained. Why did AI mess with success? I find Kara totally annoying. Makes me wonder if there is truth to the "casting couch" theory. I think the reason AI has been such a success is because Randy, Paula and Simon compliment each other and Kara has thrown a wrench into what has been working so well. I hope the producers wise up and get rid of Kara before their viewers get fed up and stop watching.

What the show needs is more focus on the contestants, not the judges. The producers are admittedly going for more drama at the judge's table and have no concept of what made the show great back in the day. The show is a singing competition, not a competition for judges to get more air time. I predict the ratings will continue to tank.

I think its a kinda bad idea....it was great with three judges and three judges is enough! I cant believe the producers iddea!! I cant believe this!! :z!! But lets see how it turns out..... this is NOT a good idea.....!!! Even though she is a AWESOME song writer I dont think she fits in for american idol. I wonder what would happen if she wasnt on the show and who would win this year with her not on the show. Then, they have the same contestants and she is on the show....who would win..if there would be the same person to win when she wasnt on the show this year and when she was..??(hopefully I dont confuse you..aka the persont thats reading my comment) This year is going to be very interesting!!

This sounds interesting, even though I don't watch the show anymore. Kara DioGuardi is one of the best songwriters out there!!!! And she has a beautiful voice....so at least there's one judge who can sing besides Paula.

uh. Three is enough. Don't bring another person in to this. Its dumb. Its a stupid idea, I don't know what the producer is thinking. But apparently he wasn't at the time. Four people... if two decide to put a person through... and the other two don't, what the hell are they guna do? Ummmm. It will be interesting. I just think its a bad idea.

I think that three's enough why do u need four what happends if there's a draw then who picks who moves on Ryan thats smart he's the host . i think this is a stupid idea if you bring one on then why not two . Simon , Paula , And Randy have been doing good for years why fix something that dont need fixin thats just stupid.

If what they wanted was change to keep people watching then a celebrity guest judge would keep people watching and interested. Adding a permanent fourth of a someone the "people" don't really know is a big gamble. No one will really care what DioGuardi thinks..., she'll just be the 4th wheel.

Paula really came off as a ditz last season in judging a performance that never happened (amongst numerous other scatterbrained incidents), so perhaps she'll be more on her game with a female peer sitting next to her.

Adding a fourth judge completely changes the dynamic of the show....if it's not broken then why fix it?!?!? UNLESS Paula is getting "canned" at the end of this season since Nigel Lythgoe is gone and can no longer save Miss Paula Abdul.

Boo! I enjoy the three judges that are judging the show now. I don't really care to see a fourth. I like it just the way it is w/Ryan Seacrest as the host. I don't see how a fourth, unknown, judge can help ratings.

Judges should only have a 1 year contract, the show is tired, the only brain I hate to admit is Simon. The other two cannot put a sentence together. A 4th judge, why?????

I don't see the point of adding this fourth judge. I enjoyed the banter between the three of them, and all of a sudden, we get this random insight. Why fix what isn't broken? Idol was functioning fine without this addition. But who knows? Maybe change is good.
