American Idol Season 8

Watch out, William Hung! American Idol’s eighth season kicked off last night with a handful of hopefuls who gave the infamous “She Bangs” singer a run for his money. Take a look at some of the best of the worst Idol’s season premiere had to offer.

Remember these past Idol contestants?

MICHAEL GURR, performing “Starts With Goodbye” by Carrie Underwood
Mesa, Ariz., 17-year-old Gurr dares to do what many auditioners would deem unthinkable: cover a tune by an actual American Idol! Offering up Season Four champ Carrie Underwood’s “Starts With Goodbye,” a nervous Gurr “could have been singing in Bulgarian,” if you ask Simon Cowell. His warbling performance was so bad, in fact, that he made himself ill during the process and needed the help of show paramedics after his audition.

ERIC THOMAS, performing “Ribbon in the Sky” by Stevie Wonder
A giddy Thomas, 18, enters the audition room just grateful to be there -- “I’ve seen you on TV!” he mumbles excitedly to the panel, before showing off his back tattoo bearing his self-proclaimed moniker: Sexual Chocolate. “Did they spell it right?” asks Paula Abdul. “It looks like ‘chacolate,’ she adds before dissolving into giggles with Kara DioGuardi. “You stole [the nickname] off Randy, didn’t you?” Simon snipes.

When it’s his turn to perform, Thomas stumbles through Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky,” earning a curt “Thank you, Sexual,” from Simon, who cut him off midway through. It’s a No for Thomas this time, but as the judges found out, the cards were dealt in his favor -- if he auditioned and didn’t make it, his mom promised to buy him a car. “So this [is] good news,” says Kara.

LEA MARIE GOLDE, performing “Every Time We Touch,” by Cascada
Idol’s new girl got more than she bargained for when Golde, 16, auditioned. “I’m Kara DioGuardi’s biggest fan,” Golde proclaims, as she thrusts her “songbook” into the judge’s hands. (Paula Abdul, who famously dealt with her own Idol “superfan,” Paula Goodspeed, sat quietly as DioGuardi’s fan came forward. “I love that you’re a fan of Kara’s,” Abdul says without emotion.)

See Paula's worst outfits of all time.

“I’m a cross between Hilary Duff and Madonna,” Golde, clad in a pink cowboy hat, says. “That’s what my music sounds like. It’s really fun and a little daring, but not too much.” Once a crushed Golde exits the audition room, DioGuardi laughs with the judges: “That was my fan. What does that say about me?!”

RANDY MADDEN, performing “Livin’ on a Prayer,” by Bon Jovi
One of Season Eight’s first “rockers,” California sales rep Madden, admits he has no vocal training but says people stop him on the street to tell him he should audition for the show. “I just want someone to tell me I’m great,” he says before singing. "This is going to change my life tremendously!"

Launching into the iconic Bon Jovi tune -- which Simon deemed “wimpy” and “cliché” -- Madden hit all the wrong notes before breaking down in tears. “You’re coming over as a drama queen,” Simon says. “You don’t have star quality, and I don’t think you ever will.” Madden's parting words: "I'm in leather pants, sweating in Arizona… What more can I do?!"
