I am African-American and it is because of the pride YOU and the "descendents" of other European immigrants show in your legacy and history (Italian Americans, Jewish Americans, etc)that I and others like myself who are the descendents of African slaves were encouraged during the lates 50s and early 60s to show the same kind of pride in our African heritage.

I do not call myself African-American because of the Africans in Africa today or because I was born in Africa (and I don't care what Morgan Freeman or what other high-profile blacks choose to call themselves-they speak only for themselves). I call myself African-American because of my African ancestors who made it to the shores of America and SURVIVED the antrocities of SLAVERY!

I love the history of the Irish and the European immigrants. Unfortunately, too many of YOU (not specifically you)do not respect the history of African-Americans.

As a Canadian I was quite happy to see Obama chosen as President of the United States of America. Certainly not because of the colour of his skin but by the merit of his character, his intelligence and his abilility to lead. What better markings of a President than that.

I cannot believe the posts on this site with regards to race. The colour of your skin, your sexuality, your sexual orientation, how short, tall, obese, not obese, disabled or blessed with no problems should not affect the merit of your character or your ability to do an adequate job regardless of the post you hold.

For those of you who consider race more important that the character of the man should be ashamed of yourselves. Your parents obviously raised you to be bigitous and self righteous so I hope in the final days of your life you realize how pitiful your existence on this earth really was!

This is so silly. Who really cares. He is our new President! I don't care what the race is, he is a very smart, well educated man. He will do a wonderful job, just give him a chance. I watched the Obama's on 60 minutes, the more I see them, the more respect I have for them. They seem so nice, and caring. I am a WHITE female, and I am NOT a racist! Some of you people are stuck in the 50's!!

I am a white woman who comes from an Irish family. And I refer to myself as an Irish American. The history of the Irish coming to America is filled with discrimination. We were treating just like African Americans and Jews. There were signs all over New York and Boston sayings, "Irish Need Not Apply." My Great Grandparents couldn't find work and could barely provide for their family. We were called dirty micks which is just like using the "N" word. We could only go to the beaches that the African Americans and Jews went to. Yes, we are all Americans but people hold on to their heritage to show respect to their family that has come before them. I think it is a beautiful thing. I love this country more than anything. I am proud to be an American. And I am proud to come from Irish immigrants.

I truly admire this young, intelligent man...president-elect Obama. Malia and Sasha are very lucky kids with such wonderful and loving parents. Michele is equally lucky to have a husband like Obama.

I think it's funny that they call him "black" when he is only half. Why don't we call him "white" since he is half that also? I also wonder if he would have have been elected if had not been half white. If he had been very dark skinned would he have been elected? I know many people who voted for him solely for his race.
