Barack Obama, who takes office as President on Jan. 20, kicked off the first day of his twelve-night family vacation on Oahu with an early morning workout, followed by an 18-hole game on the putting green on Sunday.

The Hawaii native, 47, clad in black shades, a white polo shirt and light-brown cargo shorts, teed off at the Olomana Golf Links with a group that included pals from his school days.

At the 9th hole, Obama stopped to buy hot dogs, fried-egg Spam sushi, passion-orange sodas, a Powerade and a Coke.

"How's everyone doing? You having fun?" Obama asked bystanders.

"How was your shot?" one of the residents asked.

"It's terrible," Obama joked. "I knew you guys were here, so this is where I was aiming."

Obama, who alleges he has a 16 handicap, then took a swing, and said, "All, right that wasn't bad. I didn't embarrass myself."

Meanwhile, Tom Patri, one of America's top teachers and head golf instructor at Friar's Head on Long Island, analyzed snapshots of the left-handed player's game for the New York Daily News.

"Obama seems to have a lack of unwinding/pivoting of his lower body," he told the New York Daily News. "Mr. President-elect, you need to get the hips to swivel a bit sooner in the downswing motion if we are going to create any speed. Otherwise, Dwight D. will hit it past you, and he is dead!"

But still, Patri said: "The brief video clip we saw shows him to be pretty darn athletic. He has a wonderful range of motion and a fairly good sense of balance."
