President-elect Barack Obama named Hillary Clinton as his secretary of state Monday in Chicago.
"I am proud that she will be our next Secretary of State," he said in a press conference.
Clinton, who currently serves as New York's junior senator, said she was looking forward to the chance to shape the future of the U.S. during the war on terror.
"America cannot solve these crises without the world and the world cannot solve them without America," she said
Clinton added: "I believe that best way to help serve my country is to join President-elect Obama. Mr. President-elect, I’m proud to join you in what will be a difficult and exciting adventure."
The current Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, praised Clinton from London earlier Monday.
"I know that she will bring enormous energy and intellect and skill to the position,” she said, adding that Clinton had a "deep love for the United States of America."
"I am very fond of her. She has worked very hard on behalf of the country," Rice added.
Obama and Clinton competed against each other for the Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton withdrew from the primary race in June after receiving 18 million votes.
