Ok, if a singer does not need to sing in order to gain applause then the people she is singing for are not too bright or there for another reason. Most are probably there for another reason, like her fans who were children. A singer who does not sing is not a singer. Hence the "sing" in "singer."

Her albums sold are not indicative of talent, as proven by the Macarena reference (for those not getting that the Macarena was the one of the top selling singles of all time when it was released). It spent 14 weeks at number 1 and sat on the charts for more than a year. But looking at the charts the only modern day acts who have had any chart milestones are Jay-Z, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. Those are the artists who have had the most top ten albums and spent the most weeks on the charts. It is estimated that she has been outsold by Donna Summers, Madonna, Whitney Houston, The Village People, REM, Pet Shop Boys, Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Backstreet Boys, Wei Wei, Valeriya, and many more.

Being that her core audience during her most popular time was made up of a large percentage of young teens and children, they are also more likely to purchase an album rather than download it illegally.

Catchy music is not a sign of her talent either, just that of her producers.

Her albums sold are also part of the music business and the promotion of acts. Her promotion is the entire reason she has a career. It's less about talent - singing and musical ability - and about how they can be dressed up, trotted out, and publicized in the media. Her first hit was a result of the video and a catchy hook. Without her Lolita sex symbol status she would not have received much if any play for that song. She is a created star.

The talent is in her creation (credit to producers and managers) and in her ability to play that creation. That is not at all indicative of musial talent.

No matter what you will say guys Britney will always be Britney. She's already a legend and her records and performances prove that... Her songs were cool and catchy and many people love it. Unlike other singers out there, Britney doesn't need to SHOUT to death to get an applause or a standing ovation. They might have the most powerful voices which you always say Brit doesn't have but why britney had multimillion albums sold. Their business is not all about singing, Remember that! It also touches their ability to connect to people and it so happen that Brit connects better in her peformances, she's the ULTIMATE entertainer!!!

We are living in a weird world and part of it is the fact that these good singers ["they say"] cannot surpass the not so good Britney. Which means the CROWN is intended for BRITNEY SPEARS because she is destined to be the queen.

The VMAs are not an appropriate venue to discuss lip syncing as almost ALL pop acts fake it there whether they do on tour or not. If you can't pull it off on tour, as Britney does not, then what you've accomplished is pulling the wool over the eyes of a lot of people, which to be fair is quite the accomplishment. She is a great entertainer which is not to be confused with singer.

Madonna proved she could sing with Evita. She also does not lip sync through entire concerts. Singing is also about being physically fit and Madonna has shown her devotion to her performances with her desire to stay fit. If you're huffing and puffing through a dance routine you're sure not going to be able to sing. Which is why seeing any singer/dancer smoke shows that they are not overly concerned with their skills.

there are lots of singers in the entertainment business who don't have powerful voices like Dion and Carey but they can sing and sell albums. Madonna isn't as powerful as Dion or Carey but she's an icon.

So she can sing well on one YouTube video, big deal! That makes her a good singer? Why cant she sing like that all the time then??

Great singers are always consistent because they can actually sing. They dont have days when they can't sing live and then other days where they sound amazing. Mariah Carey is always flawless (and live!) in concert, same with Celine Dion. I'm not a fan of Dion but I know she is technically one of the best singers in the world. Britney is no where near the calibre these two are and she never will be. She simply doesnt have a powerful enough voice.

For those who think she can't sing, listen to the YouTube video of her singing a Christmas song. It is from when she is younger and her voice is AMAZING. They do change it in the studio, but she actually has a very lovely singing voice.

I agree 6:05. I've heard her live and it sucks. Her voice is noticeably altered when recorded, as do many pop singers, but most others can back it up with some live singing. I've yet to see her do that. Can't lip sync through those auditions!

I'm still not convinced she's well, so I'm doubtful as to whether this is good. One slip up and it could be a setback for her. Her family has done a great job of getting her activities restricted so it's hard to say if she's actually getting better or if it's just hidden better. But she looked obviously better at the VMAs so that's a good sign.

6:05, thats a matter of opinoin. she can sing, ever herd "Sometimes" or "from my broken heart"? she is amazing in those songs and her voice is so real!! its just the well known fact, that you can not sing well and dance like britney does, at the sametime! get with the times!!
