I can't believe a person can be so ignorant. I have an autistic child that is 10 yrs. old and is non-verbal he cannot tell me how he feels or communicate anything to me verbally, and this ignorant jerk says this is something made up. Truthfully some people need to think before they speak and gather knowledge about a topic before you open your mouth and speak about it. My son is unable to play and exist like a normal kid because of his diagnosis of autism, so for him to downplay an epidemic as serious as this is like a slap in the face to so many families dealing with a traumatic diagnosis of autism. I know he has probably never spent one day with a child with autism, so he needs to stop spouting his alcoholic nonsense.

My christmas wish - My grandson is Autism because of an experiment gone wrong by the medical community. I wrote his story in a book. This book tells the world why here in America we see 1 in 150 children being diagnose wityh Autism. My book will save millions of children from contracting Autism. But I am poor. I need a Car Van for my Autism Child and I need $3.000.00 to publish my book through self publishing because all top publishing companies are not excepting new submissions, and going through an agent has been very difficult to say the lease. For Mr. Leary to use the term "lazy" is quite interesting. My son works HARDER than anyone just to say simple words due to the motor planning issues he has. It's the most commendable thing a parent can see in their autistic child. Gee, maybe Mr. Leary has never seen a child suffering from the physical problems of autism either - like the constipation so bad your 3 year old is doubled over in pain that keeps him up crying all night or the seizures that can put him into a hospital, or the sensory issues that prevent him from enjoying a simple children's birthday party.....it's very sad that Mr. Leary did not think about the consequences of his words. As a former employee of the Boston Red Sox, all of the employees there who considered Mr. Leary a friend can safely say he is not now. There are employees there who HAVE autistic children such as myself. Mr. Leary should take out a one page apology in every media outlet in the country and maybe take a minute to educate himself on autism. I'd be happy to lend him the library of books I have had to purchase to try to help my son overcome his disability.

I have read these comments and am shocked at what I have read. I am from the UK and unlike you we do not have to pay for medical treatment so for a doctor/paedetrician to diagnosis Autism/ADHD/Aspergers in UK there are no financial benefits to them. My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with Aspergers (form of Autism) and ADHD. He has been assessed and watched by school nurses, doctors and paedetrician, psychologist before so called "labelling" him with Aspergers and ADHD. It is not something UK specialist diagnosis lightly. He has social and communication problems and is behind his peers in learning Maths etc. Cant control is temper and hits out because he does not have the right words to express how he feels, he cant sympathise with people. But is an amazing artist, is great and well above his age at creative work, model building, maybe he will be architect when he is older. He is not stupid, he is not lazy. He is my pride and joy. Although he is hard work I love him to bits. I have two younger children and have done nothing different with them as far as parenting skills go and they do not have autism. So how can autism be down to parenting skills. For those who are unaware - autism has been medically proven to be a neurological problem - where chemicals are not right in the child's brain which was probably the case when they were born so how can parenting be blamed????? I think Mr Leary is just sad and naive and anyone who agrees with him should spend 24 hours with a family with autistic child... IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BRAVE ENOUGH THAT IS. TO BE PROVED VERY WRONG.

The adage of "Ignorance is bliss" is absolutely appropriate. Maybe Mr. Leary should spend just one hour with a family who struggles daily with the effects of autism. It is heartbreaking when you're child cannot verbalize even the most basic of their needs, or has sensory issues that makes noise, lights, and even your own touch unbearable to them. When you have to have YEARS of occupational therapy to zip your own jacket or to put on your own socks. Or see a speech therapist just so your own family can understand what it is your trying to say. I am not fat nor am I lazy and I certainly am NOT innattentive to my children- who are identical twin boys. I have HIGH expectations of my children who are beautiful, wonderful human-beings that have a place in this world, just like that of Mr. Leary and his family! The difference is I would not attack a community of people with-out one iota of information or first-hand knowledge of what that community is about. Maybe his career is lagging and the best he can do is gain the media's attention by attacking the millions of children who cannot defend themselves! For some reason the attacks on these children are growing by the misinformed. All they seem to be doing is giving others more reason to attack our children. You have not made a judgment call on me Mr. Leary- you have made it on my innocent children. Has Mr. Leary ever considered that maybe the issue is not that of incompetent or lackadaisical parents, but that the air, water and food has more and more chemicals in them than ever before and no-one really knows how these chemicals have had an effect on ALL of us a species? Probably not.

As far as Mr. Leary making the comments he did about our children, i am presently getting a petition signed against him and possibly a class action lawsuit from all the parents of autistic children. I am not doing this for monetary gain. I WANT AND DEMAND an apology from him whether its on television or newpaper or however he wants to do it. My 9 year old grandson is autistic. He is niether "stupid or lazy". We as caregivers have no idea how these children will be able to take care of themselves someday and for him to make remarks like that is disgusting. I dare him to contact me. I WANT him to contact me at my email address and explain to me how he could be so insensitive and so uneducated about autism. All of you parents out there that agree with me on this should do the same. I, for one, am tired of our children being the blunt of someones joke. It is not funny at all. If Denis has any guts at all, i would love to speak to him pesonally and even invite him to my home to see my grandson. I will leave that to him to see how brave he really is, to see if he can face autism head on like we have to each and every day.

He sounds more like he's talking about ADD and ADHD. There are a lot of adults and kids who cry wolf with ADD when theyt choose not to own up to laziness or not paying attention.

It's a sad fad and needs to stop. There are people with these problems and the liars are making it hard for the real sufferers to get the help they may need.
