Elizabeth Edwards has spoken out for the first time since her husband John, a former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, admitted he had an extramarital affair.

"There's a lot of adjustment to make," she told the Detroit Free Press, adding that she's in "an ongoing process of finding your feet again."

Edwards, 59, said, "Trust [is] probably the most difficult hurdle."

In August, John told Nightline that he had an affair in 2006 with a campaign staffer. He denied being the father of her child.

Asked whether she has forgiven her husband of 31 years, Edwards, who has an incurable form of breast cancer, replied: "I don't want to feed the monster, if you don't mind."

Edwards seemed to reject the line of questioning by suggesting that if she had her leg amputated, people wouldn't ask, "Are you over that leg thing yet?"

Instead, Edwards said the affair gave her "clarity" to focus on health care reform and their three children, Cate, 26, Emma Claire, 10, and Jack, 8.

"People have this idea that we represented, as a couple, some sort of perfection," she said. "In some ways, there was a perfection about it, but obviously not in all ways.

"They felt that by his actions, he had taken that away from them," she explained. "There is no perfection out there."
