Kara DioGuardi admits it wasn't easy being the new fourth judge on American Idol.

"It was a little unnerving," she told reporters during a press call Thursday. "I didn't know where I was going to sit and when I was going to speak."

But she said she is slowly finding where she fits among fellow judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

"I would say that Paula has a lot of heart. I would say that Simon pretty much tells it like it is. Sometimes he can be pretty harsh, but he's usually right," she said. "And Randy? He's the diplomat."

As for her own judging style?

"I think I'm a combination of all of them," she said. "I do like to say it like I see it.

"I don't mince words, but I do have a heart," she went on. "When you're dealing with creative people who have some talent, you want to encourage them."

On the new season (which kicks off Tuesday on Fox), she said "the males [are] the strongest" -- and there "at least five" who could win.

One Idol male she'd like to work with: Daughtry.

"I would love to co-write with him," she said. "At one point, he was going to do a duet on a song I'd written, but it never happened. So if he's out there, please call me!"
