It's pronouced Na-Veed, but seriously, no one would really guess it because of the off the wall spelling. I like the name, don't get me wrong, but they could have done better in the spelling department of the name. He'll go through school and life and someone will always ask how to pronouce his name probably. I like Ely as well.

My mom gave me an uncommon name at the time and now I hear these young girls with the name, problem is, my mom spelt my name in a way that it gets pronouced differently, and so I've had to go through school and life itself correcting people. I had always got mad at my mom for the spelling, but I'm over it now. However, now I can understand how someone wants to take a somewhat traditional name or a name in general and put a new spelling spin on it. For example: Ashley, Ashlee, Ashlei, Ashleigh...things like that.

For anyone thinking this is a "simple" "sound-it-out" name, it is simple only after someone tells you how to say it. It's not a word or a proper name in any language (try Googling it as "'naviyd' -usher" to see what I mean). And the phonetics of it certainly aren't those of any Western language, and since it isn't a word or a name in any language with a western transliteration available, who knows what phonetics (if any) it is supposed to be using? I really don't get saddling a kid with a name that is merely a collection of sounds, a name whose pronunciation will always have to be corrected. My own name was not very common when it was given to me, but it does have history and meaning and a recognizable pronunciation, and it went on to be the top girl's name in the U.S. for ten years in a row. Any bets on how many other Naviyds we'll see?
