Hmmmm... he died unexpectedly, but was battling cancer. I don't know how that is possible. The family must have expected that he would pass away some time in the near future because of that news so how can it be unexpected???

![]() Alexandra Wyman/WireImage.com Michael Crichton, best known as the author of Jurassic Park and the creator of NBC's ER, has died. He was 66. In a statement, his family calls his death unexpected, but said he had been privately battling cancer. "While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so -- his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes," his family tells ET.
