Swimmer Michael Phelps Breaks Record With Eighth Gold Medal
Sunday August 17, 2008
![]() Timothy Clary/AFP/Getty Images Swimmer Michael Phelps won his eighth gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing Sunday – a record for any one Game. The 23-year-old, who smashed seven world records this week, is also the highest achieving Olympian of all time with a total of 14 gold medals. "It all happened here this week," said Phelps, who had fought back tears as he accepted the medal. "[Eight is] a lucky number for me now, too. Seeing 8-8-08 and the opening ceremonies starting at eight – I guess it was maybe meant to be." Phelps' performance in the 4x100m medley relay Sunday notched him above Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He had tied Spitz's record on Saturday. "I'm lost for words," Phelps said. "The whole thing, every race, one after the other from winning by one-hundredth of a second to finishing if off with a world record. It's an amazing experience." On Saturday, Spitz said Phelps is "the greatest racer who ever walked the planet. "It goes to show you that not only is this guy the greatest swimmer of all time and the greatest Olympian of all time, he's maybe the greatest athlete of all time," he added.
