Michael Phelps is NAMOR!

Not to beat a dead horse about how AMAZING Michael Phelps is, we all know it, but I can't help but comment about ignorant people....Believe me, I have been a competative swimmer for 2 decades and it isn't the swim Cap!!!!! He would dominate Spitz today if they both swam and the both had no cap, and I am a Spitz fan!! Technology happens, from lane lines to depth of pool to starting blocks all the way down to yes, the swim suits and caps. But you can't afford to be that nieve and think that Phelps achieved what he did because of a Swim cap! The sheer fact that you wrote that shows that you are clueless in the sport!! Lets not forget that Phelps would have tied his record back in Athens if hadn't given up his spot in the relay so that is friend could have the opportunity to get a GOLD medal! Now that is as selfless as it comes!!! Spitz had his time and he WAS AMAZING!! But the time is Now For PHELPS!!

Pretty impressive. But Spitz won 7 golds without modern swim-cap technology. Now, I'm not taking anything away from Phelps. Rather, I propose a division of the swimming races. One race for "capped" swimmers and one for "un-capped". The world deserves to know who the fastest swimmer is (Spitz)! Not just who has the best swim cap (Phelps)!

Congratulations Michael!!!! Your dedication and hard work truly paid off. You are a true inspiration for people of all ages.

In addition, Spitz was an amateur, all athletes in the Olympics then were required to be certified as amateurs, they could take no money for their feats. No athletes in Spitz's era could accept as much as a swim suit without being disqualified. The athletes today are professionals. Phelps got a million dollars from Speedo when he won gold medal #7 and tied Spitz's record, but you can't compare the two at all. Would Phelps have gone through what he went through to do what he did if he would never get a dime for it? Would Spitz have retired when he was younger than Phelps is now, if he could have made millions from his efforts? It's not just the suits, the pools, the science, and the technology that have changed the sport -- it's the money. And it's not the same.

Michael Phelps has accomplished something amazing, and has done so without all the ego that so many athletes display. No doubt there are more people watching the Olymics than in all the past years just to see him succeed.

I have always admired Mark Spitz; not only for his athletic ability but also for his humility. His words to Michael Phelps after winning #8 were the very definition of class. I'm really glad Mark held the record for as long as he did, and I'm glad someone as sweet as Michael picked up the torch.

Way to go, Michael!

5:06 - Slivia your point is well taken. What Mr Spitz did in 1972 was amazing and will stand next to what Mr Phelps has accomplished this week as two of the best performances in sports history. Yes it is true that there have been advancements in the sport, the suits, the conditioning and training involved all have evolved over time but that can be said for every sport. There is a fine line in comparing athletes from the past to those in the here and now but those comparisons are inevitable. There are certain people who come along and change the way their sport is seen. Mr Spitz did that in 1972 and everyone who had a passion for swimming has aspired to better his achievments. That is what Michael did this week. He also brought the spotlight back to his sport and the Olympics in general and will inspire a whole new generation to take to the water. There is nothing wrong with that and it doesn't take away what Mark did all those years ago. In interviews he has been so gratious and given nothing but praise and encouragement to Michael and his goal. I was not alive in 1972 myself but know that the climate and circumstances that surrounded those games were very different and the adversity the athletes at that games had to endure are unmeasureable but this moment in time belongs to Michael and what he has done this week and everyone who wants to relish in the moment should. It was amazing!!!
