Obama's First Dog Finalists: Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Hound

 Joe Raedle/Getty Images President-elect Barack Obama and his family are close to picking a First Dog. He told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week that his family "seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound. See what kind of dogs your favorite stars own. "So we're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up," he said. "This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary." See the Obama's family's best "Just Like Us" moments. He also said his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, are also adjusting well to their new school, Sidwell Friends. "They seemed to thrive," he said. "I'm trying to figure out why it is that they don't seem to be fazed by anything. They just don't seem to be intimidated. Look back at photos of famous first children. "People think — you know, folks think I'm cool," he said. "They are a lot cooler than I am. They just don't seem to be intimidated." I think they should keep looking. That's a pretty big dog for girls his age. Also, Labarodoodles are pretty ugly. They should really reconsider. I think they should get a SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIER. Those are the absolute best dogs ever. They would also be a better size than the 35-50lbs for the PWD.

They NEED to get a porty.. I have a 10 year old porty named Misty… shes the best and most beautiful dog in the world… she looks 100 times better than any porty I've ever seen in a picture(cuter than the dog in the above pic.. which is adorable).. shes completely black except for a milk pan marking(streak of white hair underneath her chin)I haven’t seen a single hair shed from her in this entire time.. and despite what people are saying… they don’t need to be in the water or realy active… my dog actually doesn’t even like the water that much.. and she currently lives in Northern Ontario Canada(I'm in Hollywood right now)… so she doesn’t get walked that much(its freezing).. and she has no problem with that… when I went home for xmas break since Id been watching the dog whisperer.. i tought her how to walk on a treadmill.. not so much as tought… but put her on it.. and she started walking… no problems whatsoever… and tought her much much more...so obviously… very smart…. misty is the most peaceful dog in the world and she loves anyone….. not really loves… but it seems like shes half cat half dog… she doesn’t really give much of a **** about anyone… in other words… she wont bug you ever…. shes the most ‘chill’ dog in the world… my dog was worth over $3000 when we got her.. but her value has appreciated… and shes worth much much more.. if not priceless...

Great dog. My daughter same age as his older one just loves our puppy Ginger. First generation labradoodles (mom lab, dad poodle) like ours do shed some. This is a popular dog. I doubt he could get one at a shelter.

I think the Labradoodle or Portuguese water Dog are both great idea's. I especially like the Portuguese water dog. Both of these dogs only have one coat, which means less shedding, and less dander. They ARE NOT hypo-allergenic as a lot of people have already mentioned. ALL DOGS RELEASE ALLERGENS. I'm allergic to dogs, and I have 3;). They say you should be around the prospectic pooch for awhile, and see how intense your reaction is. Also over time it will become less of a reaction as you get used to the dog. My doc told me I can keep my dogs, that they shouldn't affect me that much, and they don't:). And for the one who said you should never introduce allergens to your kids, I hope u never decide to get them allergy shots, cause *GASP* that's what allergy shots do, they introduce the allergen to your blood so you can make anti-bodies, and over-time you become immune to those allergens. Get a clue. And don't use the cats and you kids allergies for the reason why you don't don't bring the kids to your mom's;). Nothing wrong with the Obama's getting a dog, as long as they do it properly, which i'm sure they will be doing.

You guys are all so lame. My husband is allergic to just about any animal, and we decided to get a Labradoodle... he has NEVER had an issue with her - and I can guarantee the Obama's will love Labradoodles just as much as we do. My little Labradoodle is terrific around my son, and is less hyper than a purebred lab... I doubt they will have issues bringing up their new friend if a Labradoodle is in their near future. Quit bashing on them or the pups...

No such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Poodles have LESS hair and dander than the average but they still have dander (like all living things) that are the culprit in stirring up allergies.

No one with allergies to dogs should ever even entertain getting a dog. Why would you? Why would you put your kid through that, because she wants one? Kids want a lot of things that aren't good for them. I have a kid with severe allergies. I won't even let him go to my mother's because she has two cats. I can't imagine exposing my kid to a known allergen. That's ridiculous. JUST SAY NO. That kid's going to get sick and then what happens to the dog? Even if they find a good home for him, he's going to have bonded with those kids and the kids with him and it's going to be heartbreaking. IF (and I say that with much skepticism) that kid is really allergic to dogs, it's insane that any loving parent would allow them to be exposed to something that will make them sick. I don't believe for one second she's really allergic. I think they just want a certain designer type dog and this is the best way to stave off the criticism. What happened to getting a mutt like him anyway?

He's not going to go to a shelter and rescue a dog for his girls; he's putting his "it's between X and Y" out there, hoping the perfect breeder will give them a dog. And who does he think will care for this dog? If he's bringing his MIL to the White House to take care of his CHILDREN, who's really going to take care of the dog? MIL? Doubt it. Michelle? A Tyler Texas, [not a bohunk town] news station was taking phone-ins and discussing what dog this family should adopt. Most callers were being cordial, but one redneck said that he thought Obama should get a coon dog. I kid you not. Well, the newsman laughed and said , 'I'm with you Rick.' They all then proceded to have a good laugh.

I can weigh in on this. I have kids with allergies and I can vouch for the fact that they can't be around any dogs of any kind. My mother in law has two poodles. They are a breed, I think, that is supposed to be good for allergies. My kids can't even go in her house. And she keeps her house spotless. So there is something to the fact that kids who really are allergic can't be around dogs. Maybe it has to do with the extent of their allergies? I don't know. Both of my kids have lots of allergies and are on medication. We can never have a dog. Just not worth it.
