I am not the hugest fan of present-day Oprah. However, "The Color Purple" was one of the best movies EVER made and part of the reason for that is Oprah's portrayal of Ms. Sophia. The others are Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover's portrayals of Ms. Celie and Mister.
And don't forget Shug Avery!!!! (OOOHHHH, you sho is ugly!!!) LOL.
Anyway, Oprah IS an actress and whether she could have equaled or surpassed Mrs. Davis' STELLAR performance will never be known. However, I will say that some people are just MADE for certain parts. Did any of you know that the woman who played the original character in the PLAY auditioned, too? And SHE didn't get the part either.
I agree with Viola Davis' assertion of how she got the part: "It was divine intervention." She was MADE for it. In this way, I guess I've answered my own interrogatory. No one else...not Oprah...not the woman who played the character originally...no one...could have played it better because it was meant for HER.
Blessings...
