Ryan Reynolds Running NYC Marathon to Honor Dad With Parkinson's

Though he admits, "I am a running joke," he says he is determined to hit the finish line to honor his father Jim, who has spent the last 15 years battling Parkinson's. "I've watched my father -- a strong and proud person who successfully raised 4 arguably insane children - slowly, cruelly stripped of his independence," he writes in a new Huffington Post column. "Witnessing my Dad suffer over the years galvanized my need to step up," he goes on. "On November 2nd, I'll join thousands of other men and women to march in lockstep solidarity toward searing psychic pain and physical humiliation." Reynolds -- who recently wed Scarlett Johansson -- says he is also running in support of Michael J. Fox, who is also afflicted with Parkinson's. "Like so many before me, I found it impossible not to be touched by his story of overwhelming strength, passion and relentless commitment to help those afflicted with this insidious disease. The man is inspiration exemplified," Reynolds writes. "Plus, he was in Back To The Future." Reynolds is asking for a donation but insists, "No donation is too small - and certainly, no donation is too large. And if you don't give anything at all, maybe I've primed you for a future donation in someone else's name. For someone else's cause." (Click here to make a donation.) He says fans are welcome to greet him at the finish line. "On behalf of me, my father, and everyone struggling with Parkinson's," Reynolds signs off, "our endless gratitude." I watched my grandfather go through the very same thing. However, he didn't have the disease for 5 years because he died from pneumonia 4 years ago. I watched a very strong, proud man turn into a helpless child again. He could no longer walk or feed himself. It was very hard to watch. He also started to forget who we were. I'm glad his suffering has ended and I very much hope they one day find a cure. RYAN.....YOU'RE AMAZING AND I WILL PRAY FOR YOUR DAD!!!!!

It is sad that his dad has such a terrible disease but it is great that he is willing to do something to help the cause.

I also meant to add, that Ryan is the spitting image of his Dad. Good looks seem to run in the family. Also I wish to congratulate him on his recent marriage. Much happiness to both of them.

I worked in a Senior's Facility in White Rock, B.C. Canada where Ryan's grandmother Helen Reynolds lived out her life. I met Ryan's Dad many times and saw Ryan once when he was about 18 or so, when they came into visit Helen. I was unaware that his Dad had Parkinsons. I used to ask Helen if she saw Ryan's movies and she said "No, he makes those silly movies". She really had a sense of humor. Ryan's Dad told me that when Ryan went to Hollywood he would give it a try for one year and if it didn't work out he would come home and further his education. I guess the rest is history. What a fine family they are. I wish Ryan the best of luck and will donate locally.

Awful disease. All these neurological diseases are. Parkinson, MS, ALS...they're just awful. It's disgusting that half of Americans will get cancer in their lifetime, but at least there are things you can do to increase your chances of not getting it. Exercise, keep your body fat down, eat close to nature, take supplements, don't smoke, manage stress. When it comes to these other things, it's more of a mystery. There are a few positives they've found. Vitamin D decreases MS risk by up to 40%. Coffee decreases Parkinson's risk by a pretty good percentage. There's still so much mystery though. This is why we need stem cell research. We may be able to cure these diseases (cancer, diabetes, and heart diesease too) if our leaders show some spine and federally fund stem cell research. Quit wasting money on the bloated military so we can go to war every 5 years....and put the money into disease research instead!
