VIDEO: Sarah Palin: I'm a Pit Bull in Lipstick
Wednesday September 3, 2008

Sarah Palin put on a brave face, amidst family drama, as she delivered a rousing speech at Wednesday's GOP convention, slamming Barack Obama and billing herself as a Washington outsider.

Dubbing herself "an average hockey mom," she joked, "You know what they say the difference is between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick!"

Blasting Obama's background as a Chicago community organizer, the two-year governor of Alaska said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."

To tout her fiscal record as governor, she told the crowd that when she took office, she put the governor's jet up for sale on eBay.

"And I thought we could muddle through without the governor’s personal chef," Palin, 44, said, adding, "although I've got to admit that sometimes my kids sure miss her."

Her immediate family -- husband Todd; pregnant daughter Bristol, 17; and daughter Piper, 7, who held her 4 ½-month-old brother Trig -- was on hand. Levi Johnston, Bristol's boyfriend, also sat in the family's VIP box holding Bristol's hand the entire time.

While Palin did not address her daughter's pregnancy scandal directly, she noted, "Our family has the same ups and downs as any other..." (She then added that raising a son, Trig, with Down syndrome inspires "a special love.")

John McCain joined Palin and her family onstage after her speech.

"Don't you think we made the right choice for vice president of the United States?" he asked. "And what a beautiful family!"

The crowd erupted with applause.
