As an accountant, I’ve learned that there is often a difference between what people donate to charity and what they claim on their tax returns.

Some people don't claim all, and some not any, that they donate because they want to keep the pure feeling of giving without expecting anything in return - not even a tax break.

Then there are the people who give of their time but who don't bother with the hassle of keeping up with it throughout the year - not even to receive a tax break.

I don’t know anything firsthand about the charitable donations or charitable works of any of the politicians mentioned here and I really don’t care. I’m just imparting a little information.

People you all need to get a life and grow up... I ran by this on accident, checking to see when my friend was goong to be on the show and this was @ the bottom. You guys are all losers. I cannot believe you guys are all adults. Wow... how sad.

You do not have to have presents to enjoy Christmas.People seem to have forgotten what Christmas is all about. A child asked me the other day "Is christmas when Jesus died or was he born then? I was shocked, and it takes a lot to shock me. If you can't enjoy christmas without spending lots of money then you do not know the meaning of it.Oprah is actually doing the right thing, regardless if it is a commercial decision or not. Maybe this year parents will concentrate less on buying presents and more on what christmas is truly about.

Oprah is a hypocrite

I think oprah is doing good for the people and I am doing my best by doing the very same thing in what I can. Its all about how GOD sees it now and how you are rewarded in Heaven.

Wow. There are a lot of bitter people out there in regards to this election. Oprah can support whomever she choses it's her right. Just like all of you who are bashing Obama on this website, you have that right and so does she. To think that this country has lost, last I check this country has steadily declined the past 8 years and we are reaching the culmination, this is all due to the current president and the party who backs him. Palin is about as dumb as dirt, she should be called 360 as she NEVER answers a question. McCain is on his last leg, and an elitist. And those of you who supported them wanted them to lead our country? Come on give me a break. Reality check: The economy is it's worst shape in years, and we are all getting affected in some way shape or form. We need a change, or else we will all be in the unemployment line together.

Okay, get it straight people comment: how much money does Bush,Cheney have over Obama and Biden? I think you should look at that info. Maybe thats why they donate sooo much, hell the have way well over enough to last forever/ever!

People get a grip. Everything advertised is not something you may need to have or buy just because anyone said it. Do you ever write to Glamour, Elle or Vogue and tell them to stop advertising outrageously priced, ugly "coutoure" clothing? NO!
Ms. Winfrey gives these gifts away because she is fortune enough to do so.

Not too sure how this turned into a political debate, BUT since people are talking about "BITTER" Republicans, Bush, and Palin, I would like to give my opinion.

First of all, Anon 1:23, You think the unemployment rate is high now because of Bush, just YOU wait. When Obama RAISES taxes for businesses, that is going to force a lot of companies to shut down or reduce their work force to compensate for having to pay higher taxes. When this happens, people will lose their jobs anyway, will have no money to shop, and force more layoffs and store closings. See how that works? I would wait to point fingers if I were you. I hope this is the kind of "change" you wanted.

Second, "BITTER" Republicans donate more money to charity than the democratic party. VP Cheney donates 80% of his salary to charity every year and Bush donates a large percentage as well. Obama and Biden donate under 2% of theirs. Wow, WHAT A GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION!!! This information was found by a nonpartisan reporter, so it is not biased in anyway.

It's sad just how ignorant people can be...

Now, regarding the article. Oprah is one of the few celebrities that actually does a lot for the community, so people should not bash her. There are many "do-gooders" in Hollywood that really don't do sh*t. They donate $1000 to charity and want articles in magazines written about how great they are. PLEASE! I donate more money to charity than that and I don't make $30 mil. a year!
