U.K. Cosmo Investigating Faux Scarlett Johansson Interview Claims
Monday December 15, 2008

Scarlett Johansson

January's U.K. Cosmopolitan published a cover story on Scarlett Johansson, in which the actress broke her silence on her wedding to Ryan Reynolds. The only problem? It was all made up.

"The quotes attributed to Scarlett Johansson regarding her marriage in the U.K. edition of Cosmopolitan are wholly fabricated," Johansson's rep, Marcel Pariseau, told Perez Hilton. "Ms. Johansson has at no point granted UK Cosmopolitan an interview, and she has never discussed her personal relationships with the publication."

The feature ran quotes detailing Johansson's take on marriage and love.

See how Scarlett's style has evolved over the years.

Johansson was quoted as saying: "This is a very beautiful time for me. Getting married is a huge moment in anyone's life, and the few months leading up to it were a little crazy."

The magazine also includes quotes about how she "and Ryan are in love, and we're enjoying evolving our relationship together," and how she admits to being "in situations before where a guy hasn't been into me."

Johansson's rep said that even when the U.K. edition interviewed her for its August 2008 issue (before her engagement to Reynolds was announced), she remained silent about the topic.

Pariseau added: "Ms. Johansson states the following when asked about her relationship: 'I hate feeling like I have to share my personal life with anybody. So I'll take the normal celebrity route and just say I'm going to keep my personal life private.'"

Cosmopolitan issued a statement Monday to Usmagazine.com that addressed the fabricated quotes.

"U.K. Cosmopolitan printed an interview with Scarlett Johansson that included quotes from an agency journalist regarding the actress's marriage. We ran these quotes in good faith with the understanding that the interview was carried out with the approval of Ms. Johansson and her publicist. U.K. Cosmopolitan is taking the complaints by Ms. Johansson’s publicist seriously and is investigating the matter further.”

Look back on the big star weddings from last year.

According to Perez Hilton's blog, Johansson is taking legal action against the publication.

"The cover story is an obvious attempt by U.K. Cosmopolitan to gain monetarily by misinforming their readers," Pariseau said. "Ms. Johansson, who goes to great lengths to preserve an authentic representation of herself with respect to her fans and the media, is disappointed to see a seemingly reputable publication inexplicably publish a work of fiction at her expense."
