The other half of the fish-out-of-water duo seen in The Simple Life, with pal Paris Hilton, the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie has made Hollywood headlines due to her lifestyle of clubbing and partying. A popular candidate for photo shoots everywhere, Richie’s main assets are her shrinking figure and her fashion sense. Richie was widely criticized for an e-mail invitation to a May 27, 2007 party, which included a sarcastic "No girls over 100 pounds allowed." In July 2007, she was sentenced to four days in jail for her December 2006 DUI. However, Richie's fame helped to bail her out, and, on August 23, 2007, Richie was released just 82 minutes after taking her mug shot.

Originally engaged to DJ Adam Goldstein, with whom she had discussed doing a reality show based on their relationship, Richie broke it off after just nine months in late 2005, although the couple did attempt to reconcile in early 2006. Nicole dated childhood friend Brody Jenner, ex-boyfriend of Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari, over the summer of 2007, but they came to a mutual decision to remain just friends in October of the same year. Richie has been dating Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden since his split with Hilary Duff in late 2006. On January 11, 2008, Richie gave birth to the couple's first child, daughter Harlow Winter Kate Madden, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Although there are rumors that the new parents are planning a summer 2008 wedding, Richie's rep tells Us: "not true… they are not even engaged!"

While going through a series of serious drug addictions, the actress ended up starring in The Simple Life with Hilton, which defined her celebrity.
