Nicole: I Took Five Pregnancy Tests

Nicole Richie was so surprised to discover that she was pregnant, it took five home pregnancy tests to convince her that she was having a baby.

“It took me -- it really took me a long time to really -- for it to sink in,” she says. “I actually didn't even really believe it until I heard the heartbeat.”

Richie was speaking to Diane Sawyer for an exclusive interview running in three parts, Thursday and Friday on ABC's Good Morning America and then Friday on 20/20.

The couple, who have already started a video diary for their unborn baby, tell Sawyer they don’t want to know whether the child is a boy or a girl.

“We're going to try and hold out,” says Richie. “Try.”

So what did dad Lionel Richie say when his daughter called to tell him he’s going to be a grandfather?

“He was really quiet,” according to Nicole, who says he told her: “Now you're going to get to experience everything that I have and everything that you've done to me, it's definitely going to come back to you.”

The reformed wild child still has to serve four days in prison for pleading guilty to a DUI. Richie was arrested last December after she was seen driving her SUV the wrong way down a California highway.

Richie, 25, admits that she had smoked marijuana and taken Vicodin earlier that day.

“I literally thought that I was ok to drive, and I clearly wasn't. It was bad decision after bad decision after bad decision."

She continued: “I’m so lucky that I didn't hurt anyone else.”

Madden, 28, admits that he contemplated ending the relationship after his girlfriend was arrested. “I said to myself, well, you can walk away now, and it's a great time to walk away because you have a reason,” he told Sawyer.

“You could say, ‘Nicole, it's been great, but, you know, this freaked me out.’ Or you could go with your gut. And, you know, my gut with Nicole has always been she's a great, she a great woman.”

The mother-to-be admits her arrest has been a real wake-up call.

"I kept making, you know, bad decisions or mistake after mistake after mistake and I wasn't growing. I wasn't going anywhere," she says. "And I saw myself start to go down that road again with this particular situation."

She appeared somber when Sawyer brought up the 16,000 people a year who are killed due to drunk driving.

“If I could personally apologize to every single person that has lost a loved one from drunk driving, I would,” Richie says. “And unfortunately I can’t, but this is my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult.”

Madden chimed: “She's doing what she has to do, you know, she's paying her debt -- you know, she did something and now she’s got to answer for it and that’s what she’s doing.”

The former Simple Life star claims that she is now clean ("I don't take anything now") and is confident that she’ll never get behind the wheel under the influence again.

“There’s absolutely no way,” she says. “I’m now responsible for someone else and I have to set the right examples.”

She added: “I want my child to look up to me and be proud of me and I want to be the best parent that I can be.”
