To kick off her first world tour in four years, Madonna put on a crown of thorns, hung herself from a cross, and compared President Bush to Osama bin Laden.
The Material Girl sang her ballad "Live to Tell" while suspended from an enormous mirrored cross as, behind her, video screens showed images of Third World poverty and grim stats like the 12 million children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Later, during new song "I Love New York," she deviated from the script to make a crude reference to Bush and oral sex. We’ll see how Bush responds in his next State of the Union...

Despartely seeking substance after all these years as the style-meister she is finally digging back into the files of 1980s performance art without understanding what the young of that decade were on about .. i know because i was one of them and those crucifixtion pieces were always tacky and overdone ... she used to skulk around the edges of the scene, stealing ideas but always using them in the aid of her ambition to be a popstar ... pop music and culture is about style and everytime one of these rich celebrity freaks try to say something meaningful they fall on their botoxed faces or asses depending on your take ... just sing, if you cant dance and if you are too old to not trip on stage then retire, gracefully ... my bet is she wont and because ambition is her real drug and god she should be around to bother us for a while yet ... the only thing i have in common with the purple sweaty spandex nitwit is i do not watch tv anymore but that is so i dont have to see her alonwith all the other celebrity freaks who populate culture these days ...so nice of her to protect her children from the mind and spirit rot with which she has infected everyone elses children ... she has become a billionaire thanks to tv and nothing says hypocrite ... by the way nbc is paying her millions to broadcast her latest performance art show (nothing worse than bad performance art with an unlimited budget) but i guess her kids wont be watching ... too bad all that money cant buy the skills to act, parent, think, have a heart .... as sandra bernhard said a while back .... take a few years off and become a human being.

Madonna is here to stay. She is a cultural icon. She has the power to change things. She is truly a wonderful spirit. 90% of the haters on here have absolutely NO idea what Madonna's message is because they haven't even see the show. There is a reason behind the image. If it takes shock to get that POSITIVE message across, so be it. She is an artist and an amazing one at that.
If Madonna REALLY didn't matter anymore, WHY is she still at the top? Get a clue haters. The fact that you've even spent two minutes of your time posting on here proves my point. Madonna evokes controversy and stirs discussion - in itself creating change and bringing things to light.
She is one of a kind!

Madonna is absolutley correct. Whether you want to admit it or not, she has always been an icon and has an effect on culture. She gets extra points from me for standing up for what she believes in and not being afraid to express her opinions. Yes, Madonna has always enjoyed attention, but is it such a crime to try to raise awarness? Its not 1985 anymore, and you need to set aside some of your previous opinions and realize, yes, shes changed a bit, and yes, she cares about the world's future. A few years back on her Re-Invention Tour she made political statements as well, and now shes discovered new ways to express them. True, Madonna deciding to hang on the cross was quite gutsy, but she wasnt neccessarily focusing on religon, but rather how children in parts of the world are sick and suffering. The cross could represent some of the horrific expriences people around the world are going through. I think it shows some maturity on her part that she is trying to find ways raise awarness on issues going on in the world. Just becuase shes living in England doesnt mean she cant care about the rest of the world and have opinions about things going on in her own home country. Calm down, and maybe try to view it in a different perspective. The world is a unique place, which is a wonderful thing. And Madonna sure is brilliantly unique. Once again, shes earned my respect.
And for those of you who think Madonna is a has-been, you may want to think again.

OMG I can't believe she's doing things like this, especially considering she doesn't even live in America anymore. She's a total fake with her fake British accent and fake face to match.
I fully believe in freedom of speech and religion, but I wouldn't put too much stock in anything a celebrity says, especially Madonna who has changed her image more than some people change underwear! Give it up, Madonna because NO ONE CARES!

I grew up with Madonna's music in the early 80's. And til today, I still listen to her music. She, like all of us, have some good qualities. She is a talented & creative person. And I admire her inner strength, boldness, she's very ambitious & a hard working person.
So, having said that, I also know that she's not a "Saint". I went to her Drowned World Tour. It wasn't controversial at all. Actually, it was a pretty good concert.
I've noticed that sinced she married Guy Ritchie. Madonna had tamed down her acted. She seemed to be a better person. Now that there is trouble in their marriage. It seems like her old wicked ways are resurfacing.
I guess she really can't keep up the English, well mannered, charade any longer. Your true personality will eventually come out. And it seems like they have on her Confession's Tour.
Gosh, to mock Jesus is so obnoxiously rude. She's so messed up in the head. I know she believes in God. But doesn't she know that The Father, the Son (Jesus) & Holy Spirit, are one. So, isn't she mocking God too??? And she says "I don't want people to dress like me anymore. I want them to think like me." If this is so, what kind of example is she to us & our kids. And she says that she wants to make this a better world.
I know that she's getting the attention she wants, but not quite the respect.

To those of you who say "Good for her": You are sheep. You say this so that other's will think you have a mind of your own, but you say what they need to hear. Whatever makes you seem gutsy and headstrong. You would hate if she mocked something that you believed strongly in.
To those of you who say "The church is praised for doing what she did": You are looking through one eye. No one goes to church and says "Praise ye carpentars and painters of this buildings and these pictures."
I don't have the faith that I have in God based on what any church has told me. I don't like church. It is all one man's interpretation. I don't believe that all the stories in the Bible are true. I do, however believe in a higher power and choose to call him "God". The reason that I feel what she has done is tasteless is not because it offends me. It is because she has done it in mockery of a man simply because so many people care about Him and it will get her attention. If it were a friend of yours she was making fun of to such an extreme, you would be infuriated.
To those of you who say "She's so old": Pay attention. Her age is not the topic of discussion here. If she were 22, what would your comments consist of?..."Good for her"?

After reading through all of these posts I understand why Madonna would want to move to away from the U.S.. Americans are NOTORIOUS for their Single-Minded thinking. We claim to be the leader's of the free world, to defend democracy and freedom of religion and speech and the basic right to live life as we choose to make ourselves happy. At the same time we've owned slaves, raped other countries of their natural resources, prevent gay people from having the same right as any other person who wants to find love, try to put women's rights back 40 years, among other hypocritical agendas all in the name of "religion". GET OVER IT PEOPLE! Not everyone one in the world is Christian, and NONE of us were at the concert to testify what exactly was going on on the stage or exactly what message she was trying to convey to the audience. Long live Freedom of Speech!! At least until Bush tries to take that away from us as well.

But lets face the facts, this is a 40 something year old woman with two young children at home. Immagine the example she is setting for her children. Hanging herself like Jesus from a cross? Very tacky. And lets talk a second about her wardrobe (or lack of it)....I always say, if you have it, flaunt it.....but do it with some tastefullness please. She is no longer a teenager. Sure, her body looks good, but show some class and cover up a bit for the sake of your self, your husband and your children. As for her comment on Bush, she is entitled to her opinion. So let her speak her opinion freely. Some may like it and some may not. Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) is now receiving death threats for the comment she made about Bush at her Texas concert. But dont worry Madonna, you look buff enough to fight off any attacters that come your way.
And Beth, you comment that you are glad that she uses the symbol to draw attention to the “real†crucifixion of AIDS ravaged African children. (And you don’t think that Jesus would mind at all. ) Did you ask him if he minded? I didnt think so. So that comment is just plain silly now isnt it. While I agree that the subject of AIDS and african children is sad and tragic, there are much classier ways to get the point across then mocking the crucifiction of Jesus Christ. And in case you are wondering, I am a Catholic. I do not practice my religion and so I am not one of those from the usual Christian crowd that is offended by this mock crucifiction (as you so nicely put it). But let the fact be known, this was really tacky.
