Fact: the book was written before the movie was made.

Well, that is an honest statement of a position: let us call it a fundamental agnosticism. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Pullman's not anti-God, as such. He just thinks that anyone who's pro-God has got it wrong and is doing the wrong thing.

In an interview reproduced on YouTube, Pullman is asked what his agenda is, and what he expects young people to get from his book. And his answer sounds reasonable enough. He's "telling a story", hoping that people will "think about things" after reading the book. The books celebrate "qualities such as kindness, and love, and courage, and courtesy too, and intellectual curiosity" and attacks "cold-heartedness, tyranny, closed-mindedness, cruelty".

I believe that many of the people complaining about the books would find themselves in total agreement with much of what Pullman himself believes. Or, at least, would be willing to consider an honest and open debate on the issue. But his sincerely-held, and I'm afraid to say bitterly-held, belief seems to be that the institutions of the Church which some hold to be the arbiters and promoters of truth and justice here on Earth are exactly the opposite. And that is the story he's telling.

Ok the movie IS based on the books About Killing God. The author is as athiest. The movie is a watered down version and they made the movie into a book. You are all shooting you're mouths off w/out checking. If the kids like the movie they might want to read the book. I don't want my kids watching it, personal choice. Not to say it isn't a good entertaining movie. Big deal. This movie is the Anti Narnia.

The author of the books is upfront in his interviews that he is anti-God and wants to communicate that to children. He reels them in with his seemingly innocuous initial book. By book three, it's all about killing God.

Did you actually read the books? If so, you must be the mental midget you portray yourself to be.

'firmly anti-god'? That is 'firmly' impossible, as it is YOUR interpretation. If you wish to interpret the books and movie as 'anti-god', then I question the amount of time you have to look so deep into things that are used as entertainment to create something out of nothing.

ps-There are movies made every year making Muslims look bad. So deal with it.

The movie says nothing about religion. I just saw it this weekend, it was really good. But they took all the mention of religion from the books out of the movie. And it doesn't really play in anyway until the 3rd book. Christians are concerned that if kids see this movie they will want to read the books which have religious/athiest themes in them. Yet the books are available to everyone, kids could read them now if they wanted to. And they should be able to realize it's just a fantasy novel, a work of fiction. I don't think anyone should be boycotting the movie because of these reasons.

They just had an article about how there was a lot of groups saying they were boycotting it and urging others across the web to do so because it is supposedly anti-religion. I guess it worked. I've never read the book to know one way or the other but it is a movie and as such should never be taken so seriously. It is not being presented as fact, it is just re-enacting a 'story.'
