Reese Witherspoon won't pose for sexy photo shoots to promote her films.
"If [actresses] take their clothes off, they objectify themselves," she tells the UK edition of Glamour. "I am flabbergasted by how many legitimate actresses do it."
Witherspoon, 31 – who shares custody of Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – adds that she tries to avoid the pitfalls of a Hollywood lifestyle. "I am a role model for my children," she says.
"Hollywood is one of those endless competitions," she says. "It's a race towards nothing. I just want to be the best version of myself that I can be."
Witherspoon credits her 2005 Best Actress Oscar win for Walk the Line with opening up a range of film roles. "I would never have been offered these kind of roles," she says. "There was also a lot of pressure after [winning an Oscar]. People wanted me to do a really big movie and I just wanted to do something more sort of personal and real."
Yesterday, Witherspoon denied being engaged to boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal.

Everyone has a price even her, lucky for her she's financially in a position where is a none issue.
Regarding the extra/fan, get over yourself. Nobody owes you thier attention or acknoledgement. Most extras I have dealt with are crazy wierdos from shady agencies, the unemployable types you find on craigslist. Your job is to be invisible and in the background. Not to be a fan or remotely distrupt production.
Ever thought she may have been deep in thought or in character? Possibly concentrating on her lines. Just because the camera is not rolling on her doesn't mean she's off. Maybe the noise around her may make her oblivious to your comment and just not heard you.
Can you imagine how long it would have to take to get on and off set if one acknoledges everyone, looks'em in the eye, greets and shakes hands with everyonse. Ask "how are you", when you can honestly care less, just to not appear rude. You'd never get to shooting anything.
while i have complete respect for actresses who chose to keep their clothes on for the movie screen, reese had no right to make that statement. She's criticizing really great actresses just because they went nude for a movie. That has nothing to do with you, reese, and it is known of your damn business what other actors choose to do! So what, is she saying Kate Winslet and Charlize Theron are are bad actors or terrible people just because they went nude for a movie? Wake up, Reese!
I admire and respect Reese for this decision. It is quite frightening, how angry men become when women say things like this--as if she has no right to deny them access to her body. Boundaries are important, and teaching children that their bodies are not for exploitation is very important. Women are expected much more than men to strip down in movies for "artistic" purposes....It is interesting that movies so rarely call for male nudity. Women are sexually exploited in our society, and I appreciate that Reese has grown as a woman, recognizes this, recognizes that she was exploited in the past, and chooses to no longer do this. A true artist is faithful to their values and integrity, not to the financial bottom line.
BTW, Julia Roberts had a body double in Pretty Woman. Further, the scene is to the side and back, the camera is pulled back, and it is fleeting. She is not exploited in the scene.
On a final note, being modest is not the same as being a prude. Being modest is not about being anti-sex, but to be respectful of boundaries and to resist the sale of one's body for commercial purposes. It is disturbing that men become so enraged when a woman says she is opposed to being exploited/showing nudity: it is as if they believe the woman is obliged to give men access to her body and she has spurned them by refusing to do so. Then they become angry and start the name-calling. Quite scary--and telling.
Maggie did a movie with Will Ferrall not too long ago and she had her bobbies all over the screen. Not to mention, she never had a bra on during the entire movie and wore mostly see-thru shirts. I hope Reece gets a little call from her boyfriend's sister about this holier-than-thou attitude she has taken on.
No one wants to see her naked in movies and she can't pull off sexy photoshoots.
She is a total hypocrite because when she wasn't the highest paid actress in history she was naked in more than one film.
She really needs to STFU and stop being so vocally judgemental about how other people choose to live their lives.
Chris - please get your facts straight. First of all, Julia Roberts never went topless in Pretty Woman. She very famously had a body double replace her in the bed scene you referred to (look carefully at her face...you can clearly see it's not Julia). Also, I don't think it makes Reese more of a "professional" to be rude to extras. She has this image of being all friendly and kindhearted...well then she should at least make eye contact with her fans. She is a public figure and without the support of fans, she would be nothing. She has everyone brainwashed that she is this wholesome, Southern belle who is "flabbergasted" at doing nudity. BS!!
Hate to break the news but both Julia and Reese showed nudity in films. As someone already said, Reese did a very long topless scene before she was uber famous. I was a big fan of hers before anyone knew she existed and was disappointed because it was completely unnecessary for the film. They could have made the same point showing her back while she faced Paul Newman. The film was Twilight. I have read she really regrets it. As far as her not taking the time to talk to extras, so what? She is a professional with a family and likely wants to go in, do her job, and get out. You don't hear of her doing drugs like Vince or getting into fights. I would rather work with a professional, controlling or not, than fun loving druggie who you have to worry about liability and insurance on the film because who knows what trouble they will get into.
Julia went topless in Pretty Woman. It was more discreet but it was one of the bed scenes with Richard Gere. The view is partially obstructed by part of the bed but on the DVD you can definitely see her breasts. She has admitted this before and talked about how she was so nervous shooting it she broke out in hives. She has said she isn't against nudity, so I imagine her reason for not doing more nudity is she never had a good figure and was always insecure about that. Her breasts were tiny for her big frame and saggy even at such a young age. She used to have a dark mole on one of her breasts too. Her figure is better now since she got a lot of liposuction in the late 90s for that large butt and hips, then again after her kids. If she ever decides to have a boob job, I am willing to bet she will do nudity again and this time reveal more. I noticed after her first lipo she started to wear tight, figure revealing clothes and swim suits in public, which she didn't before.
I was recently an extra in "Four Christmases" with Reese Witherspoon and she couldn't have been more cold and uptight. As she passed the "nobodys" (aka extras) she kept her head down and did not make eye contact with anyone. The only people she spoke to were Vince and the director. I didn't see her smile once, until the camera was on. When a shot was completed, a few extras said "Love you Reese" and she didn't even look up. While Vince was making jokes, signing a few autographs for kids on the set, and thanking the extras for their hard work, Reese kept her head down and quickly made her way to her chair. She is not the sweet, friendly, gal she portrays herself to be. She is an uptight, control freak and this statement is just another phony act to maintain her "sweetheart" image.
Twilight! thank you! i've been trying to figure out the name of the movie she showed her boobies in for YEARS!
thank you
One of Hollywood's smartest actress!
She was great in "Twilight," in which she was topless for at least one scene -- and I mean long shots of her topless, with long, lingering views of her breasts. (Look it up if you don't believe me.) By the way, she looked beautiful in the scene, and the movie was a quality film starring Paul Newman. I'm a little puzzled by her saying "never" and castigating actresses who did exactly what she did. Good actress, great breasts - very hypocritical
Beatiful mom! I'm her fan. I collected all her news&videos and uploaded to my own profile at interracialromancing.com. I can check them easily wherever I live
Let's respect her decision. She is a qualified mother.
She is so nice, at least in my mind. Her profile and photos were found on a interracial dating site interracialromancing.com last week.
I really respect her for that,I always thought that she had moral standards and promises to her fans that she kept.
Sounds like a stuck up prude. In other interviews hearing how she lords over her kids (I don't think they're allowed any fun at all), sounds like an overbearing parent as well. Ryan is much better off. Hearing her talk now, after being nude in a couple of films, sounds like when MC Hammer was condemning music sampling after his various music sampling hits. Look, if you don't want to be nude anymore, fine, that's your business. But putting down those who don't have a problem with it (in one fell swoop she slammed BETTER actresses Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Connolly, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and three dozen others) is absurd. No wonder everyone hates her on the new Vince Vaughn film, she sounds like a real pain in the butt. But I'm sure her attitude will change when the parts start drying up or when she reaches an age when no one wants to see her nude. Some films are trash, but others are art...and nudity is part of art. You either have a problem with nudity in general or you don't. And since when do her kids go to R rated movies anyhow?
I don't see the point for full nudit anyway. You don't have to bare your breast or bleep just to prove it's aex sceme. Some of the best were when you don't see it. It's more sensual. I was very disappointed when I saw Halle Berry's small, saggy tits. I would rather of not seen them and kept thinking they were perfect.
She's a fcuking hypocrite. If her character called for it, shoe would do it.
I like her attitude. I can see taking your clothes off to become famous but why do it when you are famous? Why lower yourself just to show off your new tits or to sell tickets? A legit actress has enough pull that she does not need to lower herself. Enough with the Demi's and Angie's and Thank God for th Julia's and Reese.
I respect her for sticking to her believes. I’m sure it’s much easier to just take the money and do it, but chooses to respect her self and not be a sell her body.
Good for her!
4:33, What has Jessica Simpson done that is so un-moral? She never had a sex scandal (unlike Nick and Vanessa who got paid to f@ck for the carmeras). She doesn't walk around with no underwear or get high & play with knives with Lindsay (aka Vanessa). Just because you don't like her for getting a divorce from potatoe nose you can't say she is anything like Britney.
nudity is plain *gasp* flabbergasting and also *gasp* so discombobulating..lol..
Fake! Fake! Fake! Can't stand her. Just shut up, nobody cares about you.
Thank God for people like Reese, unlike Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears etc. she actually has some morals ( unlike these two), AND she can actually act.
Because nobody wants to look, Reese. Good move on your part, your priss ant.
She isn't saying that she won't go nude for movies. She's saying that she won't promote her movie but stripping down. There's a difference. And I agree with Carrie...she now has children and she wants to be a good role model. Stripping down for publicity wouldn't really be a good thing for her young children to see.
Isn't Jake's sister a model for a lingerie???
Reese Witherspoon is a talented actress and I support her career completely. So glad she sticks to her skills and believing in herself and not pose nude for fashion magazines. She's in the same class as Julia Roberts.
I don't believe nudity is needed in movies at all. It's all sex appeal and if the actor or actress has great skills in portraying different characters and the audience believes it, the movie doesn't need sex appeal.
Hypothetically, I would not do nudity if I was an actress with children. However, I don't necessarily think that actesses who do nudity are automatically compromising themselves. Sometimes, it's done in an artistic way - not every movie with nudity is like Showgirls....gratuitous sex and flesh for the sake of money. She's entitled to her opinions and beliefs, of course...it is a free country afterall. But, she sounds really judgemental and "holier-than-thou".
3:56 AMEN I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING THAT'S NOT INAPPROPRIATE? SHE WOULD WANT HER KIDS TO SEE THAT? SHE HAS A LOT OF NERVE GUESS SHE SHOULD RE-THINK SOME THINGS SHE HAS DONE!
