Four designers. Three slots. One opportunity to unveil a 12-look collection at New York City's Fashion Week. Or, as Tim Gunn tells the remaining contestants on the February 27 Project Runway, they must now prepare to face "the largest and most influential crowd in the industry." But lest we forget: Chris and Rami still must duke it out for the No. 3 space.
Each designer has five months to work, highlighted by a visit from Tim for a fashion check-in/pep talk/intervention. No surprise: NYC-based Christian declares his romantic collection to be the epitome of fierce. But Tim worries that the collection, which includes a ruffled neckpiece, "needs an editing eye." Jillian (also in NYC) wows Tim with pieces that symbolize feminine strength. In L.A., Tim thinks Rami needs to "pull back" his Joan of Arc-inspired frocks. And back in Chris' NYC studio, Tim has a simple reaction to the human hair attachments on a few quirky gowns: "My gag reflex is kicking in." Oh, the foreshadowing.
The gang reunites in NYC just days before The Big Show. In presenting his finest three looks to the judges, Rami unveils an oversize blue trenchcoat, a black-and-white-patterned gown with jacket and a dramatic black beaded gown. Bottom line? No. Draping. Chris, meanwhile, shows off gothic looks - including a skirt made entirely of safety pins.
Despite a few quibbles, judges Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and Heidi Klum are impressed. Michael thinks the hair is "a little creepy," but admits Chris' frocks are "beautifully crafted." Rami? Nina praises him for designing "beautifully done" dresses and listening to constructive criticism. Michael also notes Rami's commercial viability in the industry. The magic words! Minutes later, Chris gets the boot and Rami moves on to Fashion Week. To paraphrase the show's spiky-haired wunderkind, here's hoping for a fierce showdown.
