Family and friends greeted rapper Foxy Brown as she was released from New York's Rikers Island Correctional facility Friday after nearly a year.

Her first stop: Shopping in Harlem and dining on soul food, the Associated Press reports.

Then, while cruising in a white Rolls Royce Phantom, she visited her childhood home in Brooklyn, where her mother, Judith Marchand, surprised her with smiley-face balloons. The two hugged, according to the AP. (The scene was shot for an upcoming VH1 reality show.)

"I did almost a year in prison, a year in prison, just because my name is Foxy Brown," the rapper said.

Brown (born Ingrid Marchand) was sentenced to eight months behind bars last year after she violated the terms of her probation after allegedly hitting a woman with a cell phone.

Brown pleaded guilty in 2004 for attacking two manicurists at a nail salon in NYC.
