Former Jackass star Steve-O has a mixed reaction when reflecting on his career as a prankster.
"I'm proud of what I've done in the past to distract people from the fact that the world can be a bad place," he told TMZ.com.
On the other hand, he added, "I think I could have reached for better sorts of things to be looked up for than to be an alcoholic drug addict that hurts himself for a living."
On March 13, Steve-O was involuntarily hospitalized in the psych ward of L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, around the time he was charged with felony possession of cocaine. The 33-year-old checked into rehab on March 16.
"I was a mess," he told TMZ outside of a L.A. court appearance today where he plead not guilty for the drug charge. "I didn't have my act together."
Steve-O claims he doesn't remember the night of his arrest. "I'm not even trying to spin it," he said. "I really genuinely don't remember. I was in such bad shape."
After a stint in rehab – during which he revealed he was fed alcohol as an infant and blogged about his use of marijuana, LSD, amphetamines and nitrous oxide – the former MTV star insists he's on the mend.
"What I know from being clean for 44 days is if I go back to using alcohol and drugs, I'm going to go right back to being that bad," he said. "There is nowhere in between."
Steve-O is required to attend a preliminary hearing on May 13.

Nope, not a loser and not a "bloodsucker," either. And not making many bucks at it, since I'm a part-time public defender. I get paid on average about $9.00 an hour for representing my PD clients. And if there were no defense attorneys, don't you think that there would be a lot more prosecutors who were accusing innocent people of doing things they didn't do (like the Duke University "rape" case)? I don't try to get criminals released. My job is to make the prosecutor prove his/her case, and do it within the boundaries of the law. If they are able to do that, then my client is guilty and needs to accept the consequences. If they cannot prove the guilt, then my client is not guilty. It's America, folks. You're innocent until proven guilty, and you're Constitutionally entitled to a defense. If you're ever accused of doing something you're innocent of, you'll be glad there are people like me who love justice more than money.

3:46 Anon - it's not unusual for a defendant to plead "not guilty" to charges during the initial stages (the preliminary hearing is not until May 13). There are all kinds of legal reasons why it may be in his best interest to do so that have nothing at all to do with his ultimately accepting responsibility. And yes, I AM a criminal defense attorney.

Good for Steve-O. He's a really funny guy and even though the Jackass fad is over there are still many over avenues for him to pursue in the entertainment industry if that's what he wants to do. It's good that he realizes he had a major problem and he's taking the neccessary steps to get his act together. It's about time.

Well, He is not really ADMITTING anything. He pleaded "NOT GUILTY" to the charge. If he can't accept FULL responsibility for what he did, he will never stay sober.

I think Steve-O has shown such dignity in the face of absolute despair and chaos. The letter he wrote when he was first admitted to care was beautifully honest and articulate. It's clear he's got more intelligence and self-awareness than we've seen from him on tv.
I used to think that if I healed from my depression and suicidal feelings, there'd be nothing left of me. I was wrong. They were my addiction, in a way... it's not easy to change direction from a lifetime of assumptions and thought-patterns, but it's more rewarding than I ever imagined possible.
Keep it up, Steve-O. It will be so worth it.
