Dancing with the Injuries
Wednesday September 27, 2006

ABC

Dancing with the Stars contestant Karina Smirnoff twirled her way through last night’s episode despite having pinched a nerve in her back only hours before the show began. Smirnoff, who is partnered up with Saved by the Bell graduate Mario Lopez, suffered the injury during practice on Tuesday afternoon.

“We were kind of rushing to do the dress rehearsal and during the pull-out, a part of my rib twisted in and pinched a nerve,” Karina told Us. “I don’t even know what that means -- I just know it hurt like crazy! But the doctor cracked me and said I should be fine in three to four days.”

Lopez added: “She’s a trooper and so tough, but I was worried.”

But Smirnoff’s efforts weren’t enough to garner the pair a high score on the dance floor. Judge Len Goodman gave “Super Mario” a slap on the wrist for putting an elaborate jump/lift move in his tango routine (lifts and aerobatics are against the judge’s rules). Goodman punished the pair by giving the routine a 6 (the other judges both gave 8s).

But what about the gossip that Lopez and Smirnoff are dancing the Lambada off the floor as well?

Lopez denied rumors, telling Us, “We get along so well and we do love to make each other laugh, but truthfully, we can’t entertain messing around because there’s only so much time and you really need to focus,” he said.

"They're showing all these tender moments, but none of our fights!" Smirnoff laughed.

In the end, the couple were bested by actress Vivica Fox and High School Musical’s Monique Coleman, who earned 9s across the board for their performances with their respective partners. Coleman, clearly giving the performance her all, almost lost her skirt part way through the routine.

“I almost showed a little booty crack!” she told Us. “It happens when you’re twisting around and jumping." Tune in tonight at 8 p.m. EST to find out which couple didn't make the cut this week.
