You don't understand the SITUATION. It's like paying for PPV pornography, only to find out it is blurred. I KNOW what I paid for was adult, and that is what I wanted. The content is not the issue. People would have been just as pissed had they been suspended for any other "adult" reason. People pay to hear stuff like that, and suspending O&A worked to undo the foundations of Pay-to-listen Satellite Radio. In all seriousness; rape, violence, death, and all that is not at all funny, however the bulk of the O&A listeners can understand the difference between harmless fun, and brutal savagery. I canceled my XM account because of this, as I paid so that I could listen to such open humor.

It doesn't matter what you think is funny or not funny, it doesn't matter what I think is funny or not funny, the issue is freedom of speech. The comments were made on a pay service sattelite radio station. You are warned every day that the station you are listening to contains explicit language. If you don't like this sort of thing there are over a hundred other stations on that pay service to tune in, in other words don't f***ing listen. The only reason they were suspended is because of an ongoing merger attempt between XM sat radio and Sirius sat radio. The execs were feeling the heat and decided to suspend O and A thinking that was punishing them. In reality it is punishing the listener, the person that forks over the monthly sub fee for the right to listen.

There is nothing there that will cause an immediate breach of the peace. The only breach of the peace I can envision comes from individuals who sensationalize trivial events and use them to advance their own agendas (special interest groups.)

Furthermore, where is this list of well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech? There isn't one, because the interpretation of a comment as lewd or obscene is purely subjective, arguable by context, and carries its own set of natural consequences. I don't tell black jokes around African Americans because I don't want to be punched (I tell black jokes around white people.) ONA's audience is primarily white men, so jokes about everything, including ourselves, are fair game, and neither bear consequences nor will breach any peace.

The interpretation of a personality's speech (might I add again the supposed perpetrators of this particular subject did not, themselves, say the words they are presently being judge upon,) as offensive is absolutely subjective. Also subjective is the concept of "common decency."

I have a different system of ethics than you do. I think dark humor is funny. I believe that it is my right as a human being to tell jokes and/or laugh about anything I believe to be funny. I also acknowledge that some people will not always find the same things funny as I do, so I don't tell those kinds of jokes around those people. So, in effect, I choose not to force elements of my value system onto those who disagree, though I have been bombarded by individuals who openly condemn my sense of humor as immoral as offensive.

The individuals who are offended by this, and making the most noise, have put themselves deliberately into a subjectively offensive atmosphere. This is especially the case because not only were the comments made on Satellite Radio (a subscription based service,) but they were made on an XL channel, which requires a specific, conscious decision to gain access.

So who, precisely is causing more problems? I just want to be left alone to laugh about comedically structured scenarios about rape, murder, incest, and whatever else I, personally, find funny.

I don't listen to morning zoo radio or the news because I don't think any of it is entertaining (I find the lack of intelligence in many media venues insulting.) Am I protesting in front of their headquarters? No, I switch the channel, or fire up my ipod, and get on with my life.

Rape, pedophilia, ethnic jokes, religious jokes or any subject for that matter can be funny. Only hypersensitive pansies can't find the humor in them. Freedom of speech is both a God given and constitutionally protected right.

If we had any semblance of a culture left, these people would have been pummeled by a few rightfully indignant men as soon as they left the studio.

At any rate, exactly how is the owners' firing you becase you used their resources (radio station) to spout out emotional vomit that goes against the owner's ethics or interests a violation of your rights? It's sad that this sort of thing is viewed as comedy, and even sadder that so many have written that no apology is necessary due to "first amendment rights". It's true, our freedom means that no apology is required, but general decency demands it. This incident was a sick joke, and if you need stuff like that to get a laugh, you're pathetic. Rape and suffering are not funny at all.

I'm actually disappointed that they apologized (though I understand why they did; to keep their jobs.) I also had to look up what it was that got them in trouble, because everything was copascetic when I listened to the show.

The First Ammendment covers the right of any individual to say whatever they want, including speech that other people may find offensive. There is nothing in the Constitution that says anything about being "nice," or making jokes that might offend someone else. That type of indiscretion carries its own consequences without the need for a special interest group to step with their letterhead and show fake outrage. You can either believe in freedom of speech entirely, or believe in censorship. There is no middle ground.

One problem that keeps coming up time and time again is the issue of context. RAPE IS FUNNY, when it is presented in the context of a comedy program specializing in dark humor (like O&A.) Rape is not funny in the context of its portrayal on the Lifetime channel. Take either instance out of context, and they look exactly the same. Same topic, two different contexts, though one looks a lot more offensive than the other. The key point is that one has to voluntarily view it to allow himself/herself to become offended (in which case that would make such people a bunch of attention seeking scumbags.)

First off I would like to say that, entirely no way does St. Patricks Cathedral have any relation to what the current topic is. Secondly Opie and Anthony have done NO wrong, they are getting mobbed for what a guest of the show said. Thirdly people are calling this a bit, this was not a bit, the guest is actually a homeless person as other articles have mis-informed, 99% of what Opie and Anthony say are off the cuff, they have no script, in fact they have no iteniearys. What was said was crude and dirty no-doubt, but people pay for them. Just like non-filter cigarettes they may be crude and dirty, but people pay for them, despite the fact that others don't like them, their are always other packs that people can get (listen to) insted.

We have so lost our Freedom of Speech. We talk in initials and cower to express our opinions, unless it's a celebrity, then no problem being brave. What has happened to us? Why are we so dang sensitive to words anymore? I am bored of all the apologies for simply saying words.
