Patrick Dempsey unveiled a cancer center in his name at the Central Maine Medical Center in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, on Monday.
The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, which opens March 31, will offer education and support programs for cancer patients and their families.
The Grey’s Anatomy star, 42, says he was inspired after his mother successfully overcame ovarian cancer at the hospital.
“For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and all the information out there can be overwhelming," he said. "A lot of the Web sites I went to just didn't have enough information.”
Dempsey, who provided a seed grant for the center, will also take part in the center’s public education campaign about cancer prevention and detection. His sister, Mary, a hospital employee, will run the center.
Dempsey has been wed to his wife Jillian for eight years. They have twins, Darby Galen and Sullivan Patrick, and a daughter, Tallulah.

My mother is currently fighting ovarian cancer and wasn't diagnosed until it was at Stage 3C. Anything that will shed awareness and knowledge is very positive. This is a devastating type of cancer with few warning signs and even less information. Most patients are not diagnosed early and only 20% or so are lucky enough to make it 5 years. Thank you for your efforts--they are appreciated.

My mother died of Ovarian cancer and it is so terrifying for families. How wonderful that he opened a center like that. He is such a talented wonderful person. Let him name it whatever he wants! God bless him for using his talent fame and fortune for something so positive.

I love that he didn't coincide the opening with a movie premiere or some publicity stunt. It's nice to know that there are a FEW genuine people in Hollywood!

As if he wasn't awesome already- great looks, wonderful demeanor, loving family man- he has to do this and make me love him even more. Ever since Cant Buy Me Love I have had a crush on him- dang I wish I saved those old J Crew catalogues when he modeled for them. Those pictures would be a great addition to my home!! Well done Patrick- you are a fantastic individual. Your mother must be grinning from ear to ear with pride!!
