Fall Out Boy bassist (and Ashlee Simpson beau) Pete Wentz has revealed that he once was so "completely lost and out of control" he tried to take his own life.
Wentz, 28, says he had seen several doctors who gave him prescription drugs but things worsened around the time his band had finished recording their major label record a few years ago.
"I got in my car. I remember I was listening to Jeff Buckley doing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and sat there and took a bunch of [anxiety drug] Ativan in a Best Buy parking lot," Wentz says in a video for MTV's college channel MTVU.
"And I called up my manager because I was, at that point, completely out of my head with Ativan. And I was talking to him and I was slurring my words, so he called my mom and my mom called me and she came and got me and we went to the hospital."
Wentz — who is promoting Jed Foundation's Half Of Us campaign (aimed at cutting student suicide rates) — says he decided to tell his story to help encourage young people seek out professional help.
"It's not really about keeping your head above water, it's about feeling all right and feeling safe in your own skin," Wentz says. "It's not about keeping your head above water and barely keep going."

us weekly is messed up for doing an article on this now, when that "half of us" interview was done about a year ago about what happened 3 years ago. this is old news and there's nothing shocking about it. it's nice that they have a recent photo, but it doesn't match this old story.

Well, at least stories like this, that actually mean something, get printed, instead of dumb stuff like Lauren Conrad being hurt over her friends and Brody Jenner dating another girl or even glorifying a hooker. Seeing things like what Pete went through puts a lot of things into perspective, and lets us know, the things he goes through, a lot of other kids are going through too.

I dont think telling their story glamorizes it as someone mentioned. I think it lets kids know that anyone can be a victim of this. It shows a human side to their idols, vulnerability, that people dont see because of their celebrity status. Kids can learn that they can get help and move past it and one day have a very fulfilling life that they might not have had otherwise. It is a very real problem that shouldnt be swept under the rug.

I lost a family member to suicide and it is one of the hardest things to deal with. Knowing someone was so desperate and you didn't save them is a heavy burden to bare. There is so much shame and guilt associated to it. Even when Heath Ledger died his family was quick to come out and deny he would ever do that. Like he is above that (as he was a druggie) and only evil people kill themselves. It's a chemical imbalance and temp insanity. It would be easy to tell people is was a car accident but say suicide and they take a step back and look at you funny like you are a freak and they can't relate. People assume only losers take their lives but 90% of the time it is the people you least expect and have so much to live for. The more celebs like Pete talk about it the more society will be more educated. I'm so happy he was saved and moved on to a better place.
