A top British military official says that a recent spate of threats against Prince Harry's life will keep him from going into battle.
The AP reports that second lieutenant Harry, 22, has become a target for Iraqi insurgents. If sent to Iraq, militant groups would be better able to find him, putting him and his fellow soldiers at risk.
Partly to blame for the situation? The media attention to the debate over Harry's future. "A contributing factor to this increase in threat to Prince Harry has been the widespread knowledge and discussion of his possible deployment," said top British general, Sir Richard Dannatt.
Harry, the youngest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, is the third in line to the British throne, behind his father and older brother, William. As a second lieutenant in the British Army, he is a tank commander equipped to lead a 12-man team. If sent to Iraq, Harry would be the first member of the British royal family to serve in a war zone since 1982.
A rep from Prince Charles' office released a statement to the AP conveying Harry's disappointment that "he will not be able to go to Iraq with his troop deployment as planned." Nonethless, "He fully understands General Dannatt's difficult decision and remains committed to his army career."
For his part, General Dannatt expressed regret over the difficult, but necessary, decision. "I commend him for his determination and his undoubted talent, and I don't say that lightly. His soldiers will miss his leadership in Iraq."
