For two full seasons, Australian-raised actor Dominic Purcell has played second fiddle to Prison Break standout Wentworth Miller. In season three, however, it’s Purcell's time to shine.

Purcell, who stars opposite Miller as Lincoln Burrows, gave Us a call, while en route to shoot on location in Panama, to share the scoop on Monday’s season three kick-off. As the actor explains, the season that almost didn’t happen just might have the potential to be the biggest one yet.

Usmagazine.com: This third season of Prison Break must be icing on the cake, since the characters already achieved the actual prison break in seasons one and two.
Dominic Purcell: It’s taken everyone by surprise. We’d thought we’d shot more or less what we could with Prison Break, and then to come out with this third season that is better than the first or second is just crazy.

Us: Lincoln’s character development is really ramping up.
DP: It’s been a process for Linc. In the first season, Lincoln was the guy needing the assistance, and Michael [Wentworth Miller] was certainly the character with the plan. We were on the run in the second season. This season we’re beginning to see certain sides of Lincoln we’ve never seen before. He is now a free man, and that has affected his outlook on life. As an actor, I wanted to bring something new to the table. The third season’s adding a new flavor to the show and keeping things fresh. I’m very happy with how Lincoln has developed.

Us: Since your character is no longer behind bars, what’s it like filming outside the prison walls?
DP: I’m stoked that I’m not in that prison! Went’s having to do all his stuff there.

Us: Tell us about the new female characters joining the fray this season.
DP: Jodi [Lyn O’Keefe, plays Susan B. Anthony] and Danay [Garcia, who plays Sofia] are sweethearts. It’s just great having some eye candy on set. Being surrounded by men all the time really gets me down. [Chuckles]

Us: What types of reactions to Lincoln’s character do you get from fans?
DP: Girls get a bit giggly sometimes, but I think that’s just part of being on a hit show. In general, people really dig Lincoln. They see him as a flawed guy who has redeeming features, and that’s primarily what all great characters consist of.

Us: Lastly, has anyone incarcerated contacted you for tips on how to break out of prison?
DP: To be perfectly honest, I’ve never gotten one phone call or letter. Not one. Everyone else gets lots, and I don’t. It may have something to do with the fact that they see Lincoln as a lost cause, and he can’t help them out. But Wentworth, he had to change his [home] number, because somehow the inmates found out his private number and started calling!
