@ 4:17, you are nothing but a not-so-smart person who generalizes black women, which is sad because YOU are black. It is so sad that there are many self-hating sellout black people and they include you. I am not fat AT ALL. Just because you are doesn't mean we are like that in general. Just because YOU don't take care of yourself and raised bad up kids doesn't mean all black women are like that. As a matter of fact, you most likely aren't even black.

Recipe for a scandal: Take one serving of Rachael Ray, add four cups of merlot, let simmer, and watch the racism bubble to the surface!
According to TMZ, Ray got wasted and made racist remarks about the woman who helped launch Ray's daytime TV talk show – Oprah Winfrey – at a group dinner in December 2005.
The meal took place at the restaurant Houston’s in an L.A. mall (the horror!) shortly before the perky chef’s show was sold.
Ray had “at least four big glasses of red wine,” became "extremely loud and aggressive," and began hating on Oprah.
She reportedly described for the group a portrait of Oprah from the movie Beloved that sits in the lobby of Harpo Productions in Chicago. The photo features Winfrey dressed as a slave, her bare back enhanced with scars.
"Why is she wearing slave drag?” Ray ranted at the dinner. “She obviously has problems being black."
For good measure, the one-time FHM pin-up girl weighed in on Brangelina, calling Brad Pitt a "p-ssy boy" and Angelina Jolie a "skanky, backdoor c-nt."
Ray’s publicist tells TMZ, "Rachael did attend the dinner referenced and enjoyed wine and good conversation with friends and colleagues. She denies making any of the comments referenced."
Despite the rep’s denial, we predict Ray will go easy on the merlot the next time she finds herself dining at the local shopping center. And she’ll probably take special care to ensure that all of the food groups are represented equally in her cooking on the Rachael Ray Show, lest an audience member be moved to stand up and shout, “Why’s it always gotta be a WHITE truffle?”
As for Oprah, she’ll likely take a subtle tactic of revenge. Perhaps the next time she invites the cook onto her show, O will leave a special Rachael Ray Edition turkey baster under audience members’ chairs, and have the baster-wielding loyalists storm the stage after the interview and beat an apology out of Ray. Naturally, it will be a diginified and tasteful beating to be broadcast later on Oprah After the Show on the Oxygen network.

I believe that Oprah doesn't have rappers on her show because, the people who view Oprah's show are not people who are even interested in rap or rappers. She has topics and people on her show that her viewers are interested in. As for as the comment from RR, give me a break! I am a black woman and I don't think it's a racist comment, just a little silly and maybe ignorant.
Um... Dr Phil is a bald doctor!!
Just a side note. If you weren't born in Africa then you're not African American, you're just black. Because if you want to use the argument that at one time your family dates back to Africa then so does mine. Since all life started off in Africa I guess that makes the whole world Africans.
This is for "anonymous" (4:17 AM) who has ambivalent feelings about Oprah. There is no such word as "repoire". I believe you were trying to say "rapport". You should be careful to use "real" words, especially when you make statements about black people "raising children who cannot speak standard English". By the way, you should have said "rearing"
children. Animals are raised; children are reared. As one black person to the other, I do understand your comments, but always "dot your I's and cross your T's before accusing others of using "bad" English.
I have mixed feelings about Oprah and about black people in general. As an African American woman who has seen Oprah since 1985 when I was 20 years old and am now 42,I have seen over the years, that her audience has become mostly white - today we call that "mainstream". I too believe that Oprah tries to cater mostly to white people. On the other hand, I like the way Oprah carries herself. I still think her show is exclusionary and that she tends to try to impress and gain white people's approval by mostly having white guests on her show. Also, I think that since white people are her main support, she is terrified of losing their repoire, which makes her have to cater to them and their way of thinking, which is contrary to the ways black people think. Why would she want to identify with a group of people who refuse to acknowledge their obesity as well as their illiteracy. Black women in general are fat, do not exercise, and continue to ignore how grotesque, lazy, and physically ill we have become as a people. We are also raising children who cannot speak standard English. To behave to the contrary would be considered "being white" or acting "white". God forbid we should acknowledge anything negative about ourselves.
This situation reminds me of a song i once heard at a church function, called I'm going to another level,so that being said about Oprah vs.Rachel Ray,and as well as any racial issues in the future,Well,as for me i'm going to another level.
I am a huge fan!!! RR is the best.
I don't deny that people make comments that are not very tactfull. And when you are in the public eye especially, these things will come back to haunt you. But I have to say that Oprah is an equally self obsorbed person as well. I thing that she has an ego problem and she often acts condecending to her guest on the show in very subtle way to give the impression that she is the big cheese and that she does not want to be upstaged by them.
I think this is stupid she said this how many years ago??????????
You don't hear white people saying racist for the comment she said about Brad or Angelina?? I'm I right or wrong?? People just need to grow up and stop tyring to make a story where there is not one!!!!! Plus you also know that there are alot of blacks out there taking about white people but you don't hear them saying that person is racist. All you hear is white are racist and the other way around. All I have to say can people just grow up again and quit acting long 2 year olds.
I like to say first, thank you for all who responded to this article. I believe it is a privilege for me to read your thoughts and feelings. That being said: I am a black man married to a beautiful Puerto Rican woman. I experience racism and discrimination across the board from everyone.Do I feel that Rachal Ray made an racist statement, no. It was very ignorant and cowardly. She couldnt possibly know why the picture was there unless she asked Oprah herself(which she probably wouldnt have). Now lets be realistic people: WE ALL have made inapproiate statements before whether we were intoxicated or not. But lets not lie to ourselves in saying that racism is dead. In 2008 its a different kind of racism thats all. Also lets not forget there are alot of White and Latino people who not only have died for the sake of civil rights and equality but experience racism themselves today. But let me be crystal clear on this: Black America has experienced over 400 years of slavery and is still the most hated race in this country. Is that an excuse for black america to sell drugs, become criminals and blame this country fcr every little thing that happens to us? Absolutely not. We must work harder, think faster and be smarter everyday of our lives. And I wouldnt want to be any other race. I was born as a Black Man and will die a Black Man..to me its a gift. And all people of whatever race should look at themselves in that way. For all you people out there who just say "you people should get over it or we have a meal ticket cause of student loans or grants and we shouldnt complain about anything" ask yourselves this: we are those things in place? Why is affirmative action still necessary(I dont agree with it but it is absolutley neccessary to have it)? Fact is believe it or not there is and always will be racism. There will always be discrimination. The only thing WE ALL CAN DO is grow thicker skin.
I just can't take people who judge other people to include all the comments listed above. I say people because white, black,Asian, purple,Spanish, blue WE ARE ALL PEOPLE!! Oprah is Oprah and Rachael Ray is Rachael Ray. They both are entitled to their opinion and if it does not directly effect your life WHO CARES! I will say that I see that Oprah gives back and has a wonderful Spirit and isn't that what it is all about! We are here for a short time and it is what is really in our hearts that matters and only God knows that! SO STOP THE GOSSIP!!!!
7:29 says "Oprah has issues with the language in rap. She blasted Ludacris because she felt he's insulting to both men and women. I think that's part of the reason she doesn't put rap acts on the show." i also think that this is true. if rap just changed their content and focused on something more than sex, drugs, and money than maybe they'd have a chance on the show. Oprah's perogatives are to send a good message and inform people about things that relevant in society. not pimps, hoes, and drugs. today hip hop is dead. rap is no longer rap, there is no substance in what rappers say these days.
Cry me a river. I'm a proud black man and don't have to blame everyone else for my problems. This is still the greatest country on earth and I've been successful because I didnt buy into this whoa as me attitude. If you want something in life work for it don't sit around and blame everyone else for being a loser.
Rachael Ray is a BIG mouth; annoying individual -I can believe she drinks just by her mannerisms. Her entire show is giggle giggle and smile to herself, all indicative of a self-absorbed person. Her eeov and gb routine are played out. She did, however, seize an opportunity to get ahead (nobody can fault her there) Oprah is a loud mouth, annoying individual that self promotes. Whatever happened to "don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" . Oprah is so busy letting the world know how generous she is that it makes her look, well, self absorbed, hmmm - could it be these two have much in common. Oprah also seized an opportunity to get ahead in life (again cannot fault her for that) We would all like to have had the opportunity to do exactly what these two have done, become successful financially. However, in doing so they have amassed many naysayers as well as fans. I for one change the channel when either of them is on - not a race issue - it is all about the human race issue. To each his own. Who cares if they had a war of words, they both have BIG MOUTHS and are only interested in themselves.
I am white and i feel ashamed to be white. Whats so great about it. When you are 17 you look 35. The only good thing is money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!what is that? Our fathers fathered most of the races. did not pay chid support and complain about blacks getting child welfare. make it seem like black women are ugly when they are by fare the prettiest race. they have a lot to deal with and i wish i was half as strong. after being repeatedly raped by most of our grandfathers and work all day for nothing, they should get the same if not more than indians. they were made to fight against indians it was no choice so indians get over this

Wow all this about color, you know the jews and the Indians recieved a check for the way they were treated. Blacks in America are still looking for the check they should have recieved. If Black America recieves any sum they either have to be a comic or they have a hard way to go to earn it. Yes Race is still a big issue and yes we do see Interacial relationships but they have serious problems today. As for Ms Oprah she has forgot who she is I feel. And I feel I can say this because I am Black, elderly, and female.
It's true, to some degree, that most blacks have experienced racism in one form or another. The racism may not seem apparent because they may be
criticized for a character flaw that isn't necessarily racist but could be construed to be depending on how the criticism is delivered.
On the other hand, being an elderly white man is not without certain prejudices also. Who do you think would have a tougher time getting a job? A woman, a black person, or an elderly white male? The answer is the elderly white male because hiring one does not fill any quotas and is not looked at as socially unacceptable if refusing one for a job. Racism is alive and well and it's not necessarily the typical minorities that are the recipients of it.
Let talk about reverse racism. God forbid there be a "Miss White America". I can't stand anyone that has her mug on the cover of her own magazine EVERY month. She is in black face or wants to be. Why is all this being brought up three years later???
Whatever.
It's amazing how much blacks in the US are so concerned with slavery which ended 140 years ago, and segregation which the nation has worked on for 40 years. There are more interracial dialogues and efforts to stop discrimination today than ever before- maybe in the history of the world inside the US. I am thrilled to see the number of interracial relationships (platonic and otherwise) today. 40 years ago this would be unthinkable. Just to think... so shouldn't the Jews hold slavery against the Egyptians, the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Germans, Europeans, and Russians? The rest of the Mediterranean world against Italy for Roman conquering and rule? How about if the Iraqis, Turks, Egyptians, Iranians, and Israelis hold a grudge against Greece for their conquering and killing? What I mean is black Americans need to start looking ahead. We've been looking back for too long.
just take a look at oprah's face she is frustated for whatever reason and likes to ruin a good party , in the other hand rachael ray , she's always smiling , she's got an angel face and she is the hotest woman alive , i will marry her now if she ask me to.
Okay we talk about Oprah, but what about Brad Pitt or Angelina. They were insulted; last time I checked they were not afro-american. I am not sure that this is racist statement. Rather just bad comments about other famous people. If you mention slave in reference to an afro-american everyone considers it racist. I would remind folks that just as bad as slavery was the indentured servant's lot. Often those people were treated as slaves. "whereever you find slavery you first find indentures."
"indentured servants were basically slaves and the courts enforced the laws that made it so. The treatment of the servant was harsh and often brutal. In fact, the Virginia Colony prescribed "bodily punishment for not heeding the commands of the master." (Ballagh, 45) Half the servants died in the first two years. As a result of this type of treatment, runaways were frequent."
By the way indentures were generally white folk sold either to clear a debt, cover a criminal penalty or looking for a way to survive. We have come a long way since the 1600's. Unfortunately slavery still exists in this country. I have a feeling the majority of those are white or hispanic. By making this an issue not only does it create dissention among amerericans it also brings about the very racism we want to put behind us. RR's comments aren't nearly as bad as the Reverend Wrigtt's. Frankly I think he is the racist. By the way why is it whites are racist, but not afro-american's or hispanics?
I feel that Oprah is too much of a lady to let some nonsense such as a drunk looney tune get her upset.GOD won't let Ray get away with that devilish junk,so she shoudln't even worry about it.
Well, I feel that Oprah is too much of a lady to let that
nonsense get to her.Rachael was drunk and crazy. But if she did
mean that,"What goes around comes around."GOD won't let her
off the hook. After all that Oprah has done for her.She ought
to be ashamed of herself.
I think the story is untrue because it happened 3 yr ago and it is brought up now.I love rachael and her cooking. Oprah is a big fat slob that throws her wealth and fame in eveyones face evry chance she gets. Oprah should get watch she deserves.
To the responders who talk "slavery ending 140 years ago" implying that people are needlessly holding a grudge in present day:
Slavery may be over, but we are still feeling the consequences of racial discrimination that really was brought out then. Hollywood portrays Nazi's and their hate crimes in so many different ways, but fails to really remind us often that America was just as horrible in its day. Today, what remains of slavery is racial discrimination and discrepancies it just is much more hidden.
When white people open their mouths to talk about other races in a potentially controversial way, they should mind their words. To the responders who don't seem to understand this, you should realize that their still exists racial inequality and discrimination in this world- white people don't know this because they don't deal with this day to day.
Black people may be quick to accuse racists but wouldn't you be if every day you dealt with the kind of racist crap America still endorses? In the end, just look at the statistics: black people are poorer, have worse jobs, get paid less for those worse jobs, get less education, less opportunity, get worse health care, and die earlier. This alone should let you white responders in on the reason why Blacks KNOW that Racism (i.e. the effects of slavery 140 years ago) exists still today, and more importantly that we all need to keep it in check.
Rachel Ray is a celebrity (even though many people would say she doesn't deserve it). What she (or any other celebrity for that matter) says in public/does in public, more importantly, how we as a country react to what she says/does echoes to what is right/wrong acceptable/unacceptable to us all. This is why we concentrate on it so much.
Otherwise, you wouldn't even be reading this article or even these responses this very minute, would you?
I don't see the racism in this situation. Rachel Ray is an idiot, but her opinion may be right -- that Oprah is conflicted about what being black in America means. Some of the posts here indicate reasons this could be -- does a person have to have hiphop on her show just because she and the hiphoppers share genetics from Africa? Who the hell is Ice Cube to her except another celebrity with something to sell -- with a shared genetic background? Perhaps some of their white ancestors came from the same culture, but that doesn't mean she has to have him on the show either.
What is this concept of "our community," if it can't include people who prefer the mainstream to hiphop, etc.? It's just a way to manipulate and restrict people to a certain political stance toward the world. And ultimately it holds blacks back because it encourages the perception of them as an undifferentiated group instead of individuals.
And it is time that blacks realize that some blacks incite a part of the hostility they are met with today through this "our community," separatist, hostile-over-slavery-still attitude that they bring to ordinary daily interactions. If someone's always angry and "teaching," they are going to create anger and resentment.
I think Oprah's got a huge problem with her ego, and having big photos of herself as an actress in the lobby is an indication of how blind she is to the limitations of her talent. But she's surrounded by people who tell her the moon and stars are born in her poop each day. That's being a celebrity.
Rachel Ray -- you and your show make me sick, but I think you simply gave your opinion.
Hmmmmmmm... I don't like Oprah from the start so I would have to agree with Rachael Ray. Although this happening years ago people must be getting pretty bored with theirselves and just decide to say everything they hear. To me It was Rachael's opinion, Oprah im sure has many opinions on things that isn't right. I do love Rachael very much but im afraid the fame has gone to her head somewhat and its very shameful indeed. I'm just not so sure what is so racial about what she said.
Rachel Ray is just an all around rude person who has let the little bit of success she has had go to her head. I personally know this because she invited a member of my family onto her show to talk about a food product that we make. She slammed us on TV. She didn't even try our product before the show and then she slammed it. She is headed in a downward spiral and can't get down fast enough as far as I'm concerned. She deserves whatever she gets from Oprah. A cook should know the old saying, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." She bit hard.
