This just in: Katie Couric may be leaving her gig as CBS Evening News anchor as early as January.
Under pressure to cut costs, CBS has been targeting Couric, 51, who earns $15 million a year but has failed to drive up ratings since taking over in September 2006, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Though her contract runs until 2011, she could exit after the presidential inauguration, according to the Journal.
A CBS rep called the report "speculative," but Couric did not deny it.
"I am working hard and having fun," she said in a statement. "My colleagues continue to impress me with their commitment to the newscast, and I am very proud of the show we put out every day."
Couric's days at CBS may not be over entirely.
The Journal reports that she could be offered a slot on 60 Minutes.
Another option: Larry King's spot on CNN. His contract ends next year.

She really, really sucks on the news. I thought she was great on the Today Show. Maybe because she's naturally bubbly and she tried to become super serious as an anchor. They should of picked Soledad O'Brien or somebody like that.
Whatever. She's already rich so who cares if she loses her job?

I don't know what happened here but since she moved from the Today show it is like she disappeared! I just don't think the evening news is a good fit for her. The anchorpeople on shows like 60 minutes are intense and serious, and Katie is more suited for a morning show where you have to be upbeat and chipper. She should have stayed with the Today show. I liked her better than Meredith Viera or however you spell it.

I feel bad for her, CBS lured her away from the Today Show with all that money and promises of greatness just to let her fall. It's not Katie's fault, she brought ratings WAY up at the Today Show. So maybe people need to start considering that it's CBS that dropped the ball, not Katie.
