Rosie O’Donnell shocked fans by posting a photo on her website of her four-year-old daughter, Vivienne Rose, wearing an ammunition belt.
The picture is published under a blog entry on rosie.com titled “a picture is worth a thousand posts,” and O'Donnell offers no further explanation. Presumably, the post is a political statement about war and guns destroying the lives of children around the world.
Fans responded by writing in messages of support as well as outrage.
Sandy wrote:
Ro The latest photo of Vivi is brilliant and disturbing. Sickening to know that this is reality for thousands of children around the world. Sometimes sister-friend, you break my heart. Thank you xox

Are you kidding me with that pic of your daughter? Why would you do that?
Some readers were simply confused.

Not sure of the “message” you are trying to send with that pic of Viv, but I guarantee many are not going to get it… Children with bullets, even fake…?? what are u thinking?
O’Donnell has been a staunch gun-control advocate for years. In 1999, she famously confronted actor Tom Selleck about a commercial he filmed for the NRA on her talk show The Rosie O’Donnell Show, where he was promoting his latest film The Love Letter.
Last October, after five children were killed during an Amish school shooting, O’Donnell and her conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck debated the merits of the Second Amendment on an episode of the ABC morning talk show The View. The right to bear arms, the comedian argued, is “not really a right.”
She continued: “In the United States there is debate over whether or not the right to bear arms includes the lobby organization of the NRA, allowing no rules and no registration and absolutely, sort of, carte blanche, to make guns available to Americans in a way they're not in the rest of the world."
O’Donnell, 45, made her most infamous anti-gun proclamation following the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School.
"Outlaw all guns,” she said at the time, “and put all gun owners in jail!"
