Senator Edward Kennedy was released from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC after surgery for a cancerous brain tumor.
The 76-year-old Democrat – who was diagnosed in May after having a seizure – is recuperating at home in Massachusetts.
"His doctors are pleased with his progress since surgery a week ago, and he will continue to recuperate at home before starting the next phase of his treatment," Kennedy's office said in a statement.
The senator will began radiation followed by chemotherapy.
"After completing treatment, I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to doing everything I can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president," Kennedy said in a statement last week.
Obama expressed support for Kennedy, saying, "[He] spent his life in service to this country not for the sake of glory or recognition, but because he cares – deeply, in his gut – about the causes of justice, and equality, and opportunity."
