Sex and the City Tops Weekend Box Office With $55.7 Million Gross

Despite negative reviews, Sex and the City ranked as the top movie this weekend, pulling in over $55.7 million and far exceeding industry estimates of a $25-35 million opening gross, Reuters reported.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – which was No. 1 over Memorial Day weekend – dropped to second place, earning $46 million.

SATC's haul made it the best R-rated comedy opening in history, surpassing 1999's American Pie. (Among all R-rated films, it comes in at No. 5.)

Women accounted for 85% of the SATC audience on its opening night, Warner Brothers said.

"Women are great planners and they definitely wanted a girls' night out," Dan Fellman, president of distribution, told Reuters.

The Strangers, starring Liv Tyler, came in at No. 3 with $20.7 million.

This movie was absolutely amazing. I cried my eyes out and cried even more the second time I saw it. It was the perfect balance of every emotion. I can't explain how much I loved it, it's a must see again and again. For those of you who didn't watch the series I recommend you watch the series and then see the movie because then you'll have as much appreciation for it as I did.

Those ladies were acting their asses off in that movie! I won't spoil it for anyone, but you could see every single emotion in them...happy, sad, distressed...all there. Bravo ladies. Definitely worth the wait.

My girlfriends and I bought our tickets three weeks in advance, and all showings were sold out a week later. Even at three weeks in advance we had to go to a matinee on Saturday. Every fan of the show, that I know, loved the movie. As lengthy as it was, I was never bored or waiting for it to end. It's exactly what I wanted. I'll definitely be going back to see it again before it's out of theaters.

This was by far the best movie I've ever seen!!!! I've seen ALOT of movies, way to go girls you're were awesome. I hope they do it again with a SATC part 2. I'll see it a zillion more times while in the theatre and then I'll be buying two DVD's, just in case one gets worn out, hehe.

It was FABULOUS!!! It was everything I had hoped it would be! The critics haven't a clue regarding the film!!! I can't wait to see it again myself! I hope there are more to come. If and when it's out on video, this is one purchase I will be more than happy to make! Ladies, You Rock! Mr. Big, still mysterious and yummy. Steve, Harry and the rest of the guys, you are all still needed to make it work too! All we needed to complete the evening was a Cosmo during the movie!!!

I went and saw this today, Sunday (I hope it counts towards the total tally) and loved it! Except for Samantha's lack of love scenes it was awesome! I cried, I laughed, I thought it was a perfect continuation of the storyline and hope they do another movie!

Interesting. My best mate and I are seeing SATCtonight at 6:30. I believe Sunday is still considered the weekend, not sure how they already know how much money the movie made when there are still several showings this evening. I'm sure its just a prediction, but I still think its a little ridiculous to say how much the movie made over the weekend when the weekend is not yet over. Anyhoo, from the looks of things, I am going to love love love this film!!!!!

My mother & I saw the SATC movie yesterday, 5/31, and it she said it was cute, and so I did I! It's so great to hear that Sex and the City toped the Weekend Box Office with $55.7 Million Gross, even though it was supposed to be $25-35 Million, etc.

SATC was exactly what I wanted. It was dramatic without disrupting the whole series. Plenty of fashion and fluff but not enough to make me feel dumber for watching it. Not Oscar material, but perfect for a girls night out!
