Talk about delayed gratification!

After three years of rumors that Sex and the City was being made into a movie, the film version of the hit HBO series is scheduled to start filming this fall, with New Line Cinema expected to finance and distribute.

The fab foursome, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, are all set to reprise their roles.

Exec producer Michael Patrick King wrote the script and will also direct. Parker will also be producing, along with King, John Melfi and Darren Star, who created the series based on autobiographical columns penned by Candace Bushnell for the New York Observer.

The film was close to happening about two years ago, but the project got scrapped after Cattrall demanded script control and a salary more in line with Parker’s, who, as co-executive producer of the series, was more highly paid than the rest of the cast.

Sources tell Variety that Cattrall is happy with her new deal which gives her a hefty paycheck, a future series deal with HBO, and allows her to offer input on her scenes in the film.

“I’m hoping that we’ll be hitting the street soon in our high heels!” Cattrall tells Us.

Chris Noth (aka. Mr. Big) has yet to sign on for the project. New Line is expected to close deals with supporting cast members over the next few months.

There is no word on whether Jason Lewis will reprise his role as Samantha’s much-younger boyfriend “Smith Jarrod.” “We’ll just have to wait and see,” he says.

Mario Cantone, who played Charlotte’s wedding planner Anthony, also has his finger’s crossed on nabbing a role in the film version.

“I hope it all goes smoothly and it gets done, because I want to do it very badly,” he recently told Us.
