Simon to Britney: "Get a Grip"

Simon Cowell thinks Britney Spears needs to get off her high horse.

The acerbic American Idol judge is dismissing the pop star's recent meltdown, writing off her rehab stint as a trendy indulgence.

"It's very fashionable to be in rehab," Cowell, 47, told the London Mirror via MSNBC's The Scoop. He also spoke out against British singer Robbie Williams, who is currently in rehab battling an addiction to anti-depressants.

"This whole thing is a total indulgence. Britney and Robbie need to get a grip. We've allowed these people to feel sorry for themselves. I don't know what's going on in Britney's head but my attitude is I couldn't care less. She should go back and live with her mum for six months."

The acerbic Idol judge suggested that the pair speNd time in impoverished nations to gain a little perspective.

"I went to a deprived part of the world recently and saw a set of conditions that people live in that are beyond belief," says Cowell.

"So when I hear about the Robbies and the Britneys going into rehab I think, 'I'll tell you what rehab is. Go to where I just went, where people really are suffering and then you'll see just how good your life is.'"

Actually, Simon may be on to something here. With the recent extension of the Idol brand into summer camps and amateur internet pornography, a rehab facility is the natural next step.

In "Cowell-hab," patients could stand before a panel of tough love counselors until their petty alcohol and heroin problems are solved by cheap shots about their tone deafness or Simian appearance, and jungle cruise field trips to Third World countries.

Get Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr. on board as the program's resident "healers," have a rotating celeb-rehabber appear as a guest judge each week (lord knows, you'd never lack for talent) and you've got yourself a spinoff.
