Well, America, your votes have finally determined the final 12 contestants of the career-defining American Idol's sixth season.

Last night’s results show was billed as one of the season’s highlights, mainly because they announced plans to launch a charity campaign – “Idol Gives Back” – to combat poverty in Africa and the U.S. that was certainly exciting to hear, but the most shocking news of the night was the way America voted.

After a bland group performance of Stealers Wheel's “Stuck in the Middle With You,” where the kids seemed to have fun performing while forgetting that their mics were on, Ryan Seacrest revealed who made the all-important top 12 cut. Calling the contestants to the front of the stage in groups of two, Seacrest, clad in a much more fitting black suit and skinny tie, cut the singers loose in the quick n’ dirty fashion we love.

Lakisha Jones and Blake Lewis were the first two to breathe a sigh of relief – as if there was any doubt – as they found out they were moving on.

Seacrest employed the tried-and-true “after the break” gag as Chris Sligh stepped up to learn his fate. Again, there was no question that Chris’ solid vocal performances were a huge hit with voters. Our favorite form of comic relief, Chris' ability to charm the pants off audiences will work in his favor. Who knows how he'll do during the various themed performance nights, but until then, here's hoping he'll at last get his chance to make good on his post-audition promise to "make David Hasselhoff cry," a la Taylor Hicks.

Jordin Sparks and Phil Stacey are also in the top 12 troup, but sadly, Jared Cotter’s journey ended.

As Melinda Doolittle and Brandon Rogers faced the music, America wondered if there would be room for two back-up singers in the top 12, and faith was renewed when both singers made the cut, as did Gina Glocksen and Chris Richardson.

The moment viewers across America were waiting for - Antonella Barba’s fate in the competition – came midway through the broadcast. As she and Stephanie Edwards took their places and held their breath, with a nervous Antonella almost in tears, Ryan announced the somewhat expected news that Antonella was going home.

In the night’s first major upset, Haley Scarnato beat out crowd favorite Sabrina Sloan for a spot, causing Randy to scold America for “getting that [vote] wrong.” If there’s any justice in the world, it will be Sabrina who will score the wildcard slot.

“I was surprised for sure,” Sabrina told Seacrest about her ouster this morning on his KIIS-FM radio show. “I really wanted to be in the top 12, but as a fan of the show, I know it’s a crapshoot.”

As the show drew to a close and the field was narrowed to Sundance and Sanjaya battling for the final spot, we nearly fell off our sofa as the vote was revealed. In one of the biggest Idol upsets in the show’s history, Seacrest uttered a statement that no one expected to hear.

“After the nationwide vote, Sundance, you are not in the top 12. Sanjaya will take that final spot.”

What?!?!?!

When reached for comment this morning live on the radio, a clearly stunned Sundance reacted to his ouster, telling Seacrest “I was shocked and amazed. I had not prepared myself for that at all. I can definitely say my heart was broken.”

Ours too, Sundance, ours too.

Talk to Us: Which vote was a bigger upset: Sabrina losing to Haley or Sundance losing to Sanjaya?
